'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

Of the teams he's looking at, only LSU runs I. VN's love affair with the I is an odd thing

Broad statement. Your "love affair" might be some posters liking our running back getting the handoff closer to the LOS and with a full head of steam. I think it can be easily mixed with spread formations and will keep defenses off balance, instead of setting up shop in our backfield. Running backs (and OL) love taking it right to the other team. Detractors seem to have a fear that their narrative of Butch's offense will be affected and that the Dormady's and Trevor Lawrence's of the world would actually be able to function...equally "odd" :eek:hmy:

Ya think? He looks like he just swallowed Charlie Weis whole.

Wonder if he is wearing a t-yurt under that.

If Thig actually pulls this kid to UT then he's earned his salary for the year. I still believe it's going to be a hard pull, though

Akers is looking at Georgia as well. Chaney runs pro sets, has Eason and Chubb....can't imagine they won't be in the I a good bit as well. If we incorporate it as well, which I think we will given what we saw in the bowl game, that's 3 of the 4 teams on Akers' list.

I would prefer we incorporate more pistol sets than I, but having either is important to add more versatility to the offense

I've not watched Chaney in years, but his background was in the spread at Perdue. UGA's new HC is from Bama. So it's safe to assume he's a one back zone guy. I don't imagine I will be a big part of their offense

Rbs and the oline can take it to the defense without being under center. The idea that adding more things keeps a defense off balance is also misguided, because the more you add the more you have to practice and the less effective you become at what you do run. But here's the top 10 teams in rushing average in the NCAA. You'll see all triple option and spread teams, with the exception of LSU (who has the best RB in the nation).

Perdue? The chicken dudes? You watch Arkansas at all? Chaney coordinated them. And Bama runs the pro set...downhill running...don't get dissolved in minutiae.

Bama doesn't run I. They're a single back zone team. And I did watch him at Arkansas. I think that was more of the head coach than Chaney.

We'll see.

What we HAVE been doing is not downhill running. Lot of pausing and having to fight their way out of the backfield = misguided. Noticed Stanford on your list...downhill running. I think you overrate the difficulty of that formation. The offset I isn't difficult to implement...in fact they already did. :). The spread has already been taught and fundamentalized. Sitting in it exclusively cost Hurd at least 400 yards IMO. The tough yards and the gimme yards against the Western Carolina's and North Texas's on our schedule was paltry...shoulda been easy to pad stats. Why wasn't it? Because the spread doesn't lend to ball control and eating the clock. Mixing it up allows us to match up with Bama types who struggle with it but also allows us to use our increased strength in the trenches. Oregon and Baylor struggle against the defenses we need to beat...so bad examples...stats and all. Might want to look at SOS of those other gems on the list btw. :hi:

Where'd I say that Bama runs the I? They run the PRO-SET...Zone blocking...downhill running...furtherest thing from your baby, the spread. And who cares on your Arkansas point? You posited that he's been running the spread since the PURDUE Drew Brees days...not true. Pro-set with Kiffin and Dooley at Tennessee. Yes, he tends to get pass happy...it's why his offenses piled up stats but choked during clutch situations. He'll be paired with Pittman again under Kirby Smart...they're running downhill...no

You're right. He also was at Pitt. There are very few teams that run a true power I. I guess old people don't like exciting offenses any believe in the old school stuff which is interesting.

Don't care what you call the formation. As long as the running back is running downhill AT the defense. When Hurd is draped in tacklers like hyenas on an antelope, are your loins being stirred?

Remember Hurd was allegedly frustrated with the style of offense we run, being hit in the backfield. Hopefully this year we see some power formations, and Akers takes notice
