Remember Hurd was allegedly frustrated with the style of offense we run, being hit in the backfield. Hopefully this year we see some power formations, and Akers takes notice
He was getting hit because it takes 15 Mississippi's to get through the average read option.inch:
We have a back who will break the rushing record this year if he stays healthy. A QB and another back that will combine for over a thousand yards.
There's nothing wrong with our rushing attack when the line blocks.
They will be better this year than last. It should be fun to watch.
It'll be fun watching them pile up more yards with the offset I playing off the spread. Left a lot of yards on the field last year being one dimensional. Hurd was a 1,500 yard back who had to sacrifice some running sideways and struggling for 3 yard gains...when they could have been double digit if he and his OL had been unleashed straight ahead.
This ^^^^^I think part of the problem was that our OL, though they did improve greatly in 2015, still wasn't good enough to just line up and blow people off the ball. They were greatly helped by the way our run game was schemed with lots of misdirection, pulling, and allowing our OL to win with athleticism instead of brute strength.
This ^^^^^
Some of you guys seem to think you can take any OL half full of freshmen and go out and dominate in the I. It isn't that simple.
Our line will be more suited to be able to run out of more power sets this year but they weren't ready for that the past two years. Having success with a power, downhill run game like you guys are talking about isn't Quite as easy against alabubba mid season as it is against NW in a bowl game at the end of the season, when the young OL has a year more experience under their belts.
A lot more to it than to simply say "we should have been running more I formation"
"Half full of freshmen"? What season were you watching? Lineup for MOST of the season consisted of Kerbeyson (RS Senior), Robertson/Wiesman (sophomore/junior), Thomas (sophomore), Weisman/Crowder (junior/senior) and Hall/Kendrick (freshman/RS Junior). Jack Jones got into a few games and started one, but your "half" seems to consist of Chance Hall...:thud: As for your simplification of those seeing the promise of using the offset I in the offense more often? Simply that...a SIMPLE reduction. Entirely possible that DeBord unveiled that formation in the bowl game as a
gag...I don't believe that. If we don't see it this year? I was wrong. I don't think I will be. Just because someone crosses your theory about what this team will do offensively doesn't mean they're a hayseed goober lost in the 70's. Hope you guys that are
worried that your interpretation of Butch's offense might be a fabrication of your own minds could handle that as well as I can the opposite. :hi:
I 100% agree with your philosophy of what we should be doing on offense. Keep what we are doing and add to it. I just feel like Debord believes that too and I suspect that they didn't feel like the line was ready for that most of last year. This is all just supposition on my part but i think we will see more offset I and such downhill running this year mixed in with our regular offense like we saw in the bowl game."Half full of freshmen"? And Laager? If you've followed my line of thinking more than the "throw the I at em" seems to indicate? You'd note that I'm not advocating ending running out of the spread...just mixing it up. I pointed out that Bama has a problem with the spread...mixing the spread with the offset I would actually add to that. They shut down power running games when they can FOCUS on them.
46 pages in... Can I get the Cliff Notes so far?
247 predicts, for the most part, that he is staying in state.
Without question he fills a position of need so will this be a battle up until NSD?
If OM had a recent history of great RBs or that offense was more run oriented, he would already be a Rebel. He said he will wait to see their offense (reading tea leaves means that is what OM is selling him on), also waiting on sanctions. For everybody else, they all feel good about their chances. Just have to get him on campus as much as possible. He said he will silent to someone in Oct and declare at his Allstar game.

I totally agree that some more power and I looks should be utilized this year to take advantage of Hurd. No reason not to bring it out ~10 or more times per game (depending on the matchup, of course) to give defenses more to think about and Hurd a chance to run a bit more downhill. Especially since what we saw before was basically just plays we already had with a few guys lined up differently. It shouldn't be that hard to mix in a couple handfuls of plays like that per game that set each other up.
My previous point was just that I think the fact that our OL was still developing for most of 2015 (you could argue that it's still developing even though the interior will all be upperclassmen this year) could have been a factor for why Debord and Butch didn't mix any more power looks in during the regular season.
I'm really happy with our talent and depth on the interior, but I still worry about us at OT. Richmond is a bit of an unknown and Hall had his fair share of struggles last season too. Kendrick has never quite put it all together. We're gonna need all 3 to take big steps forward if we want to more consistently give Dobbs and the WRs time to get in sync for the deep passing game.Yeah, despite the age of each member of the OL, they have changed and switched positions enough that they probably haven't reached the point of meshing that they otherwise would have. Either way, I believe Hurds maturity along with the ol will result in better number than what many of us are expecting.
At least that's what I've convinced myself of.
Akers is looking at Georgia as well. Chaney runs pro sets, has Eason and Chubb....can't imagine they won't be in the I a good bit as well. If we incorporate it as well, which I think we will given what we saw in the bowl game, that's 3 of the 4 teams on Akers' list.

Not worried about any struggles at all Hall had as a true freshman. He had far fewer struggles than one would expect a true freshman to have. And he more than held his own against Bama's DL, a game that Jack Jones also accounted himself well in. I think Richmond is really the only real unknown on the OL going into fall camp.
