'16 TX CB Bailey Phillips (Former UT commit 6/9/15)

Yeah, yikes to a guy that's about to get drafted.

And Coleman was a 4 star coming out of HS. Unless I am confusing him with someone else. More of a light not coming all the way on situation with Coleman IMO. Maybe just being put in over his head on some bad defenses also. Looks to me like B. Phillips has got a great chance to be a difference maker at college level.

You can't be serious... Drafted or not, good kid or not (and by all accounts he is a great young man), he got turned around by WR's more often than I care to remember.

And I don't see the Coleman/Phillips comparison.

JMO, I just don't see SEC defensive back in this kid. I'll trust the coaches, for sure. I just don't see the talent that we need. Nothing jumped out in his film.

Well it's a long way from Texas to Tennessee and a long time until signing day. We will see if he is encouraged to look elsewhere...

This...

People act like Justin Coleman did nothing but get beaten deep in his time here. You can't ignore the positive impact he had... he made some plays for us and developed into a good player. Just like a highlight reel doesn't tell the whole story about a player, just focusing on his bad moments doesn't tell the whole story either - you need to consider both.

I'm not saying I agree with the Phillips-Coleman comparison. I'm just pretty surprised by how negative the opinion of Coleman is on this site. He's the only Vol who is likely to get serious consideration for the upcoming draft this year, unless AJ is declared innocent in short order (and given the pace with which that ordeal has moved, that's looking unlikely).

His bad moments far outweighed the good in the opinion of most, and his negative plays usually carried far more significance than his positive ones. He was routinely picked on by opposing offenses. That wasn't by accident or chance.

Being the only player from our team getting a sniff at the draft isn't really proof of much to his credit. If anything, it's an indictment of the level of talent that Dooley left us to work with. 15 years ago, Coleman would have been riding the coattails of about 10-12 other Vols heading to the combine instead of leading the charge as our sole representative.

We most likely won't find common ground between our respective opinions, so we can just agree to disagree.

Coleman was a solid player as a Senior. Not great by any means as he still got burnt a few times. Including Pharoah absolutely owning him all game. Prior to this year he was absolutely horrible.

As much critisicm ad Justin Coleman got over the course of his career it sure seemed like he was the one making most of the INTs. Unfortunately, he was also the one getting burned the most. He wasn't very fast, which I suspect was his biggest problem.

My take on Justin Coleman is this.

Freshman year he showed some promise despite having the typical freshman moments.

Sophomore year he struggled mightily, but that was the Sunseri year, and everyone struggled mightily. In the secondary in particular it became painfully obvious as the season wore on that NO ONE understood their assignments on a consistent basis.

Junior year, learning his 3rd defense in 3 years under his 3rd D.C., he again struggled.

Senior year, finally able to get comfortable in a system, he responded by developing some consistency and becoming a pretty dependable player for the most part.

I'll say this about him, we were better in 2014 with him than we would have been without him, and in the end, I think that's a nice compliment for any player.

Coleman was awful has hips as stiff as boards. I was so happy to see him graduate.

Start all 4 years in the SEC
Be invited to the NFL combine
Excel during drills and the NFL combine
Draw praise from multiple draft analysts

Sorry Justin but you still suck. Good riddance.

Ive watched Coleman get sauced all 4 of his years here. He's a great tackler, but if you really think he has good coverage skills you're blind.

I just watch the games and call it like I see it. Draft workouts are crap. I know numerous people who have zero football skills that could kill it at the combine.

I meant that it looks like Phillips plays the short stuff well, but I didn't see much of him down field playing the ball in the air.

True. That's why a lot of great track guys aren't great football players.

Exactly. There was a kid on my high schools bball team I saw dunk over a kid from the foul line it was sick. Kid was one of the best athletes I've ever seen in my life but never played a down of football. Would of been a d1 basketball guy tho but ended up in prison.

What number of players thought they would have a chance to play in the NFL under the old staff. After getting coached up by Jones staff how many think the might have a chance. Looked at how McNeil played under his 1st year with CBJ staff compared to his 2nd year.

Didn't coleman have 4 or 5 picks last year. I think he did better than most. Yea he's pretty bad in 1 vs 1 deep routes, but he wasn't bad in the nickel spot.

He played nickel most of the year and got burned there a lot. Some NFL teams (and we pretty much did last year) have a base nickel package. I wouldn't trust Justin there in the league just as I didn't trust him last year for us.

Prior to this year, Justin had zero ball skills. Not talking about interceptions and return yardage, but noticeably oblivious that the ball was in the air or how to interfere (legally) with the receiver catching the pass. He got picked on and burned. A couple of his picks this year, I could have caught.

BUT he improved in every facet, worked hard, stayed out of trouble, and helped this team win. I'm hoping he finds a niche in the league and makes us proud. And I think he will.

This. He still isn't where he needs to be, but I think he steadily improved under Martinez. With good coaching in the league, I think he can continue to develop and become a solid player.

You don't run the fastest 3-cone drill of all participants at the combine with hips stiff as boards. His problem on those plays you are talking about were technique and awareness.
