'16 GA LB Ja'Quain Blakely (UT commit 8/1/15)

Depends on his year. He and Maggitt are the leaders on defense this year.

JRM absolutely has the potential to go this year. He is set to explode this year. We'll see if he puts it all together

Seen him as high as 2nd round in some early mocks.

Y'all know more about his background but hard to see him passing up that type of money with another productive yr.

Nah, those mock drafts you're seeing are not legitimate. No way he's a 2nd round pick right now. Last year was his first meaningful season at LB. He came to UT as a safety. He would need to have a monster season to garner legit 2nd round-type interest.

So did Alec Ogletree.

4-2-5 is used a lot but somehow we had two linebackers as the leading tacklers last year and the others got plenty of playing time...maybe we varied out of our 4-3 base because of injuries and lack of experienced depth (needed more linebackers :))
Hope you're wrong and the coaches are right. :)

I'm not wrong, I'm just asking a question. And maybe the coaches are asking the same question. That
would explain their lack of Twitter response to the commit.

Are you talking about Maybin? 2nd Round? Nonsense.

I'm not knocking JRM, he's fantastic. But he'll still be here in 2016, much to your dismay.

So if they drop him or don't accept his commitment, they don't accept any other linebackers? We've seen them " not accept a commitment" before (Sterling Johnson and Duke Shelley)...this is not how it looked. Maybe their lack of Twitter fervor has something to do with practice starting?

When the 4-3 is not your base defense, and you can only sign 20 or 21, 12 seems like an unnecessary
luxury to me.

Serious question, and this really isn't starting shi** with you. Could just be a difference in perspective. How many times can you say we didn't have three linebackers on the field this past season?

They may not have been in a 4-3 formation......but we had a hybrid with his hands in the dirt a lot. Those hybrids are not DE/LB hybrids, they are LB/DE hybrids.

Once again, not arguing with you, just interested in your point of view on this.

I'd be surprised if JRM left after this year. However, if he's healthy and productive as we all know he can be, it is a possibility. The only thing he really has working against him as a prospect is his size. If he was 2-3 inches taller, no doubt he could be a first or second round pick.

There were only 3 declared early last year and I think it was 4 the year before. It is possible he could, but it isn't that common at that position.

You really think so, HG?

I'm no Scout. Just going off what I see on different sites..

Can't knock 100+ tackles in this league with a dozen for loss.

Hybrid S/LB are the new it for NFL.

Cravens from SC is being projected as high as 18th. He moved to LB from S last yr as well.

JRM is on par talentwise. Jmo

He played LB in HS. At least he did the times I saw him and in his highlights.

He might have played safety for a week or two of fall camp, but he was destined for LB IMHO.

Regarding the 12 number, LBs are gonna be used for a lot of your ST spots.

^^^This too.

IMO pound for pound, no one on the field hits harder than a LB. There are exceptions to the rule, but overall it's the LB's.

I hope Maybin doesn't leave next year. He will be the center of our defense with Sutton and Barnett for the next 2 years

Sutton will be gone if he has a great year. He'll go up against some solid WR talent this year, and if he holds his own, he'll likely get a 1st round grade come 2016 NFL Draft. I've already seen multiple mock drafts that have him going in the 1st round. The talent is there, but he's got to prove he can lock down top WRs. Cooper destroyed him, and the rest of our secondary for that matter, last year. He also was playing hurt that game as well. Altogether, Sutton has 1st round talent, and if he balls out, which I think he will, he'd be stupid to pass up on the money he'd make as a 1st round selection.

Cooper did not destroy him.
