'16 GA LB Ja'Quain Blakely (UT commit 8/1/15)

I would imagine that's the case with most programs.

Yeah you are probably right however I admit most of the 3 star players Butch takes are players other big schools wanted as opposed to a lot of the Dooley recruits that no other power 5 schools wanted.

Eric Fisher, JJ Watt, and Antonio Brown say what's up?

Okay...... again.....

There are WAY more two and three stars than four stars, so clearly some of them will get overlooked. The VAST majority (percentage-wise) of higher stars are better.

Reminds me of Weatherd. Was Weatherd even ranked coming of HS? I had never heard of him until he randomly came out of nowhere in Juco.

Oklahoma offered him early...they've pulled a few out of Carrollton Creekview already ( it's a relatively new school). TCU lives on Texas 3 stars but I think he was a 2 star. Don't remember if either they or A&M offered before it became apparent that his grades required a JUCO touch. He was well below Mack Brown's radar...he always had his classes committed the year before. Truth is he was a local name in DFW but he could have ended up very easily at a small but good program like Abilene Christian if he hadn't exploded at Trinity Valley. I'll admit that when we offered I was shocked...figured it might be a different player.

Zerothirtyanditsdark: We are too busy bringing in 47 5 * blue chippers to our 22 Dawg Night of the summer. This week Coach Richt will be auctioning of his infamous mini fridge. Wait, what did you ask me again? I was busy reading a tweet from another delusional fan about 2 guys in Athens who were actually at home yesterday.
Decaf bro. Look into it... I was asking for a fellow VOL fan in the state of Georgia who could shed some light on this young man...

Jancek wants a replacement for both Weatherd and Maggitt. This kid, along with Austin Smith should fit the "Weatherd" role for the future. I believe Taylor and Bituli fit the "Maggitt" role for the future.

I believe Weatherd is going to surprise some people. In terms of natural passing rushing ability, Weatherd is as good as anyone on our current roster.

Agreed. I see him finishing around third in sacks, and that is really just due to fewer snaps.

Pretty modest stats last year w/ 48 tackles, 5 TFL & 2 sacks in 15 games.

Colquitt County was so loaded on defense last year that Blakely was tied for 10th on the team in total tackles (9th in TFL), and he was named honorable mention All-Region 1-AAAAAA by the coaches while 4 other Colquitt Co. LBs finished with higher honors...which leads me to wonder if he even started last year? If not he should put up much bigger numbers this fall.

...it has yet to be determined whether he’ll play inside or outside linebacker at the next level. Blakely says Tennessee’s coaches have expressed to him that he could play either or because of his unique skill set. Much of that could depend on how much weight he gains at the next level, too.

“(They) told me that with my movement and my hips, I can play outside,” Blakely said, “and with my weight I can play inside.”

Regardless, his high school coach believes he’ll be a fit at any position. “He’s 6-foot-3, and about 215 pounds,” Propst said. “He’s got some things about him. He’s very physical, he’s explosive, and he’s looked even better this summer.”

It's not Thig, or the other coaches either, for the most part.

It's Bob Welton and his department of Player Personnel & Recruiting. We have former NFL scouts performing player evals for the staff.

And yes, I trust them completely at this point.

Wasn't there another guy recently hired as well, I forgot his name. Another NFL guy I believe. In that article about inside the orange carpet event, they touched on what that staff does. Quite impressive! Bob Welton's staff watch tape and evaluate recruits way before most can or have time, and then present the players they see something in to him and the other guy I believe. If they agree the player is someone to look at, Bob sends it to Butch and the other coaches to look at. That's one way we are seeing these guys so early. We have never done this and it seems to really be working great. I'll try to find that article. Anybody got any other write ups on that?

Cam commited to Tennessee 4 months before Butch was hired. That doesnt change the fact that he was a 3* but he cant be Butch's go to 3* example. Ethan Wolf, Jashon Robertson would work but truth is in the very short time Butch has been here there have been more 3* failures then successes. That said Blakely will most likely get a bump after having a big senior year or Butch will find a better option before signing day. Butch has no problem cutting ties if a player fails to perform up to expectations.

Are you for real!? The only real class we can judge this staff on based on game day performance is the 2014 class. Out of that class, there were 13 3*'s according to Rivals. 5 of those started at some point in time last year.

5.

True freshmen.

How can you seriously call the other 8 "failures" and imply this staff isn't doing a good job!?

Agreed. I would be worried about all these 3 stars if this staff had not already shown an ability to attract the big 5 star recruits. Obviously they see something in these guys to give them scholarships and then accept them. Emmanuel Moseley was a 2 star recruit before Butch offered him and he had a better season last year than consensus 5 star recruit Josh Malone.

I trust this staff when it comes to player evaluations.

"sigh" We have the best corner in the SEC his name is Sutton and he was a 3 star. WR's shutter and the women swoon at the mention of his name. :thud:

We also still have not won more than 7 games and were the favorites in most of those. We should wait until Butch wins 9 games before putting him on a pedestal.

You can imply that based off of the on-field results.

Other than someone like a Cam Sutton (and even then, our CB depth was not good), 3 stars take some time to develop. Even a good 3 star takes a year or two to adjust to the game. With this being Butch's 3rd season, there hasn't been a whole lot of time yet. Even so, guys like Dobbs, Vickers, Robertson, Wolf, Owens, and Thomas are well on their way to make big contributions.

He's part of Welton's organization. And yes, he's another former NFL scout.

could be wrong but I don't think Butch recruited
Sutton. :hi::hi::hi:

The difference between Butch and Dooley is Butch never STOPS RECRUITING commits! Butch wanted Sutton...so did Auburn...Butch RECRUITED Sutton or he wouldn't be on the team. :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Not at all. Compared to previous classes, this one is very lackluster. I also understand that 25% or so of the kids committed right now won't sign with Tennessee.

This class has 7 four stars at this point. Last class had 8 four or five stars at this same point. It's not all that different (other than 2 five stars), and this class was always going to be more selective, which means waiting longer on some guys.

There are people who moan and complain about 3*'s and the class ranking this time of the year every year butch has been here and it makes me laugh every time
