'15 TN OT Drew Richmond (Former Ole Miss commit)

If you have read his posts, he has lived there and has siblings still in high school there. I can't disagree with him that a lot of the criticisms come from people who have never lived there. There is an East TN bias, and I know this because I went to school at UT and heard it.

I will say this again. The suburban living is about as good as it gets. The schools are top in the state, and the crime is minimal. As I said before, you don't have to be wealthy either as the standard of living is cheap compared to the west, NE, and Florida. I am sorry for your experience, but I have lived here since 1984 (except at UT) and not had anything serious happen to me. I actually am a criminal defense attorney and see it all. But it is no different than any other big city, and you just have to know where to stay away from. Sorry but people just exaggerate the negatives.

My mother in law was the Germantown Police Chief's executive secretary for many years before retiring a few years ago. I also know many people from Cordova and I myself lived in Bartlett for 2 years. They stories of crime she and they have told over the years are very similar to the ones I experienced while living in Midtown.

I'll add one more. Buddy of mine from Jackson drove to the Courtyard Marriott on Germantown Pkwy one early evening in preparation for a district meeting the following morning. He was getting his stuff out of his trunk to go and check in when a car full of young punks pulled up with a couple of them yelling at another to "shoot him man, shoot him".....guy turned around, offered them his wallet, computer, car keys, etc, but they just ignored him. He begged them not to shoot him, saying he had young kids, but they ignored him. When he realized they were gonna shoot, turned and ran.....bullet entered his right buttock, exited his right groin area, narrowly missing his femoral artery.

Glad you're able to live safely and peacefully in a suburb of Memphis. We ourselves at one point though we might move out to Collierville but eventually just decided to get out altogether. I used to love Shelby Farms and loved running around Midtown in general. Just came too close up to the crime that annually puts Memphis in the top 5 nationally. You've been fortunate. I'm betting those who say the crime is exaggerated would change their opinion if they came face to face with it like many people have who've chosen to no longer live there. Anyway, back to Richmond.

I can almost guarantee that is how he heard about that rumor.

I was Born in Memphis, lived there until I was 8 then moved to Colorado. I visited the city a few times every year and I now live there for at least 3 months out of the year. I know the city well and it's one of the greatest cities I've ever been too. I also spend a lot of time in Denver and Memphis blows that place away.

I have lived and breathed this city and driving through west Memphis and seeing the pyramid and bridge is only second to a Game at Neyland. I love those hot summer nights Memphis has to offer. There is not a place is rather be then Memphis in the Summer time.

Yes, there is crime everywhere. Question is, to what degree. Memphis routinely ranks in the top 5 annually for rapes, murders, assaults, and theft. You can be the victim of a crime anywhere, but if you choose to live in Detroit, Baltimore, Birmingham or MEMPHIS, your odds of encountering said crime go up exponentially. That's just a fact.

I don't drive through occasionally. I have now lived there the last 3 years for at least 3 months out of the year. Denver is a city with little to no vegetation, it's dry, it seems to be lacking in The Lord and there are a bunch of hipster and weed smoking losers. The City seems to be soul less and I get a bad feeling when I'm in the city.

I understand the crime because that is my business. Call me lucky, call me whatever. But it is simply not as bad as people try to make it out to be because there are great areas to live around the city. That stuff happens in parts of Nashville and Knoxville.

After growing up in Memphis, I feel perfectly safe anywhere else that I have been. I have been trained to identify situations before they develop, individuals with bad intentions before they act, in short, my Memphis "spidey-sense" kicks in and I take the safest exit... Always know the safest escape route from any location. My urban survival skills are excellent...Thanks to Memphis

Personally, the only crime I've experienced here is having a vehicle broken into and everything stolen. Otherwise, just seeing what happens here on a daily basis in the news is enough to know that Memphis is on an a very unique level in terms of crime.

Regarding Germantown, was just honestly recounting a very true incident that happened to a buddy of mine. This was about 17 years ago, in the early evening, on Germantown Pkwy a little easy of Baptist East Hospital. Worked for a pharmaceutical company. While I certainly wouldn't categorize Germantown as nearly dangerous as Memphis, there was plenty of random crime at the time that was creeping into Germantown, and even more so into Cordova and Bartlett, which is why we chose not to just move out east and moved to the Nashville area.

This is the key. You have to know where not to go. But that is just like any other major city. I have lived on Mud Island, midtown, but mostly in the suburb. Mud Island was great. We were not in the best area in midtown and just had our license plate stolen a few times. I am not trying to make it out as a rosy city to live in. But Germantown and Collierville are the Farragut of Memphis. Very safe, very good schools, and a very good living. Making a blanket statement about the area is simply not true.

Changing from the Memphis subject, is there any other team in the SEC besides Bama (and us) that has a freshman starting on the O-line? I agree with those that say our incoming O-line class is not gonna help much for 2015. Our success next year is going to be dependent on players already on the team....I was listening to Kevin Mays being interviewed on the Sport Animal this week and he found it laughable that people expect a freshmen to play on the O-line. Mays said he expected to redshirt from day 1. It wasn't until his 4th and 5th year that he developed the size, strength, speed, technique, maturity, and confidence necessary to compete in the SEC. One would think it'd be even more evident in today's SEC.

It has been my understanding that we have 5 or 6 people on VN that are excellent OC's and if CBJ had used them that Tennessee would be undefeated at this point in the season. I'm not a coach so I really don't know one way or the other.
