Hendrix is going to surprise a lot of people who forgot about him next year. Like most fresham he needed a year to develop but he will be ready next year and he's going to turn some heads. I've heard people think he's going to be very good. He's supposedly a little more athletic than Barnett but just didn't have as good of a feel for the game as Derek did as a freshman. Those two are going to be a nightmare for QBs coming off the edges together.
On last week's edition of "Big Orange Sunday," Coach Doug Mathews had this to say about Hendrix's potential:
"Hendrix, the freshman, I dont think there is any question that he can be a very fine defensive end, but [he] . . . would be a perfect candidate to move inside. He is a 270-275 pounder right now who could get up to [maybe 300 pounds] and have really fine quickness and that is what Steve Stripling, the defensive line coach, really likes at that position."
...Except that Stripling apparently absolutely loves his potential at DE. I wont be surprised at all, based on what's been said if he ends up being the starter opposite Barnett next year. (Doug said the exact same thing about Barnett being a DT this time last year).
I believe this recruitment is starting to boil down to LSU vs Tennessee. Ole Miss is definitely still in play but according to multiple sources, Kyle seems to have more of a comfort level with the Vols and the Tigers. Tennessee has made enough progress on the field to quell his concerns there and Vincent Perry's presence there is definitely a plus, though not a deal-breaker or maker. At LSU, Kyle has seen some great atmospheres on visits, they produce defensive lineman and he's developed a tremendous comfort level with the coaching staff and the environment.
I don't think Kyle's mother is going to point him in any one direction but distance is a factor in the decision-making process. If it were up to Kyle today, I think he'd choose LSU. But as time progresses, after he takes a Tennessee official and as distance becomes a reality, you have to like the way things are trending for the Vols.
Vols win = Phillips commitment
Close loss = Probable Phillips commitment
Blowout loss = LSU commitment
That's how I see it.
I was looking at it as a best DE available kind of thing. Of course if the UT staff views Phillips as a possible OT like some mentioned earlier, obviously one would have nothing to do with the other.
Disagree. I do not think the outcome of the game will have anything to do with his decision. However, we as fans need to show him a hype and rocking environment! I believe that will happen Saturday night. His quotes tell us that he is comfortable with the on the field progress being made at Tennessee. His biggest concern at Tennessee has been answered = Vol.
With Kyle's range and size along with his speed and long arms many of coaches have said the OT thing but I have seen a plenty of DEs in my time and his ability to get off the ball and up field is unreal. In training sessions we pretty much just walk through drills to work on technique and hands. When he ran the .40 at our camp it did not surprise any of us at all. KP is a crazy athlete who is raw in some areas but is loving the sound of playing on the DL with Big Mc, Tuttle, and DB. The thing that is in our favor is DB contacts KP on a regular after games and during the week. Right now I like where UT stands and feel there's noi need to panic.
