'15 TN DE Kyle Phillips (UT commit 1/3/15)

I think everyone is overreacting to a Vandy homer switching his original, horribly wrong prediction of Vanderbilt to his new prediction LSU. Not saying there isn't work to be done by Butch and co. to get Kyle here, but it's too early to make definitive statements about his recruitment.

I think basing your college decision on improvement by UT this year is a little flawed. We're young, are replacing our lines, and have a tough schedule. This season unfortunately has the possibility of looking a lot like last season. We may not improve much record wise, but the overall talent this year will be so much better. This freshman class and the way recruiting looks to be going into the future should foreshadow success going forward. I would hate to lose this guy over another tough season this year when we realistically should take major jumps forward in 2015 and especially 2016.

I would hate to be Kyle in a few years wearing a different color jersey and watching UT arrive back on the scene in a big way knowing I could of been a part of that. Seeing my home state traditional power rise back to the top competing for championships. That scenario would haunt me if I truly wanted to go to UT but was just worried about the program turning around.

JMO on the situation and his recent comments.

6 wins he might be ours.

7 wins I like our chances better.

8 or more wins, the deal is sealed.

Thigpen is the lead recruiter.:dance2:

Maybe I'm alone in this thought, but, I don't want kids who want to sit back and join UT if we have a solid season. I want kids who want to come in and make UT better next year. Maybe KM's passion to come in and turn things around has spoiled me.

I want Phillips to be a Vol. IF the staff decided to fill the spot today with a very talented kid who was ready to be a Vol today, I would not mind it a bit. This staff took what they had last year and beat a ranked USCe team. They were right there to beat UGA. The team looked improved from previous years. If Kyle Phillips is looking at his top 3 of bama, lsu, and UT and needs to see the product on the field to help him decide where he wants to play, can't say I like how that plays out for us. How does a 6 or possibly 7 win team stack up against bama and lsu? If I'm being realistic, probably not so well if trying to win a recruit if the product on the field is the deciding factor.

I don't see how these kids expect a team that is 50% freshmen to drastically improve in a single season.

It's going to be rough. Young guys are going to play early. Why not just join them and make Tennessee better yourselves? Heck, a lot of the kinks will be ironed out before they get here anyway.

These kids just don't think that part through very well

Couldn't have said it better myself...and by that I mean ... I CAN'T PHYSICALLY SAY IT BETTER MYSELF. :salute:

It's understandable. Winning is more fun than losing.

Look at Kentucky; no one really wants to play there if there's not a bright outlook and if they're not showing signs of improvement.

By winning games, it sends a message of, "Hey, at least we're not a Kentucky!"

Some kids want to play for a team that is already winning. I guess they feel it's safer and less risky to stand on someone else's success than to forge your own. Sign of the times...

Its more fun to build your own legacy and success.

Yeh replacing that awesome DL of the last 3 yrs Is gonna be so tough....not

That's what I keep saying. How hard is it to replace a D-line that was last in sacks in the conference? And the number of sacks we had last year are skewed due to Corey Miller's big game against Kentucky. I see improvement in the D-line this year as compared to last year by the simple fact that they can't be any worse.

Obviously I agree and have been saying the same thing for months. Just exactly who strikes fear in your heart that the defense will not be better and will actually be worse because he is no longer playing? Didn't think so.

We all saw Saulsberry step up big time when Stripling gave him a shot at playing time. He comes into the season listed at third team because of missing SP. Doesn't that say something about the depth that has developed? Maggitt had a year to heal. Vereen is now fully healthy. JRM is ready to go. Bynum is ready to back up AJ. Add Hendrix, Barnett and Bates to the two deep that are already ready to compete. It can only be better this season IMO.

So Bynum will compete this year? I hope you are right. I just did not see that one and already had him out the door making room for another scholarship.

Not with Butch recruiting him to Cincinnati. Butch saw something in him then, so I doubt his opinion has changed about him now. Besides Bynum is a hard worker with good character. Exactly, what Butch wants on this team.

I think it helps us here if we land Tuttle later this month. Because when he looks and thinks about that possibility of joining Tuttle and KMack, you're talking about the best d-line class in the country, no questions asked.

So it's not like he'd be joining a group of "maybe they'll be goods" he's joining a group of legitimate blue chips that aren't coming here to take a back seat to the Bama's and LSUs of the world.
