'15 TN ATH Jauan Jennings (UT commit 4/7/14)

I've been reluctant to say this as well, but yea i agree with you. He looked like a fish out of water but maybe that was the game plan. Maybe they knew Oakland would cover their receivers so well that it would open up a lot of running lanes and it was just all part of the plan.

I'd like to see him just drop back and throw a guy open.

I thought he made plays, and looked DARN good with the ball in his hands..

while he was running.

Other than that he looked like he didn't belong back there. So stiff, almost robot'ish as if he were concentrating too hard on mechanics. Playing like that will get you hurt, you have to let the game come to you and play with fluidity. Hopefully that changes, but if he still looks like that 10 games into the season I highly doubt he will ever take a snap in a game as QB.

In other words, why force a good thing? Play where you can make plays and not have to force things. He is dynamic for sure, and I think he could play any number of positions. I'd personally like to see him going up and catching passes with his range. JMO though.

IMO I need to see more improvement from Jennings before I consider him a legit threat to play QB at UT. Right now he still looks like more of an "Athlete" than a pure QB. I'm not counting him out yet. There is no denying his athleticism but he still looks to run before he throws and does not go through his progressions.

This is how I am feeling right now. He is extremely athletic. I do think he will improve but just don't know if he will improve enough to be an SEC caliber QB.

If he's good enough to be a QB then let him be one. I trust Butch will give him the proper time to prove himself and then if he's the best at QB then that's where he'll play.

With any high school qb, you have to wonder how much he's been taught about progressions. I've been around teams that didn't even have qb coaches.

His offense this year will probably be 60/40 run/pass. They will throw, but the coach likes to control the clock and pound people into submission. He slung it around when he had Sonny Gray, but Sonny's arm was a once in a lifetime arm. Even then, they were still about 50/50.

He has been taught, and if you can't see the dramatic improvement from this time last year to now, you aren't looking. Just think after another 9+ games then at least a year or 2 with UT's coaches. That is the time-frame we need to be concerned with. Who cares if he isn't ready to start for us "right now"? Guess what....he doesn't have to! At the earliest he will play for us would be 2 years from now.

I'd listen to Vol8188, he knows what he's talking about. Trust me when I tell you that you don't want to be in an argument about football development with this guy. He's one of the brightest people on this board when it comes to football strategy. He knows WTH he's talking about, and I'm sure he can see development from JJ.

That all might be true in general, but to just put a blanket statement of "how much he's been taught" and "some schools don't even have qb coaches" is not fair and completely not accurate in this case to lump him in like that. Does he know who his head coach is or the QB coach (yes there is one)? Does he know their track record with developing QB's? I would doubt it.

Believe me, I have no interest in getting in an "argument" about football development regarding a kid he has never been around to accurately gauge his development.

Seconded, it makes it very enjoyable to talk to him about it.

Yeah, I don't really get how a generalization about high school programs as a whole is the definitive statement on how JJ has been coached and developed. I'd say there's room for clarification from people who actually know how he's been coached.

I'm not putting the kid down at all, actually the opposite. Most high schools only get 5 paid spots. From that you have to put together an entire offensive, defensive, and jv staff.

So normally a lot of times qb's don't have a coach and they just split time between working with he rb's and wr's.

The other poster said the kid needed to work on his reads. I'm slow to judge a Hs qb on his reads, because I've seen plenty of staffs where they don't know how to properly teach progressions in the passing game.

So I'm simply saying if he comes in and Dormandy looks 100x better than him for the first month or so, it's probably because Dormandy played in a state that has been throwing the ball around a lot longer than most, allows for bigger football staffs, and pays coaches a lot more.

I know you weren't putting him down. I was just responding to the other guy. I knew you were just speaking generically about high school qbs. I was just clarifying that he has been coached up about that stuff and will only keep improving. JJ is playing for a great coaching staff that coaches their players up really well. I think he will red-shirt his first year as his body develops and learns the offense. We will have Dobbs and Peterman so unless one of the Freshmen just makes it impossible to keep on the bench, I think both redshirt then duel it out as rs-Freshment.

Not sure of his stats, but only played 1st half. Had a long 50 yard or so td pass dropped in the back of the endzone...would have been a great catch.

WR slowed down then realized it was deeper than he thought. Almost had it. Thought it was a great pass.

"Jennings was 8 of 15 passing for 112 yards and ran the ball three times for 34 yards and a touchdown in Blackman's blowout win over Brentwood High School on Friday night. He saw limited in the action in the second half after the Blaze jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead."

Jennings 1st half stats 4-13, 111yds tonight. Limping on to field to start 2nd half. Not sure he is SEC qb caliber.
