'15 NC DT Shy Tuttle (UT commit 9/26/14)

“(It was) pretty good. I just really hung out with the players and coaches,” said Tuttle, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 15 overall prospect and No. 4 defensive tackle in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite for the 2015 class. “I’m definitely going to try to get up to another game (at Tennessee).”
The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Tuttle said he most recently had visited Tennessee to attend its home game against Georgia on Oct. 5.
While he said he didn’t arrive on campus in time to watch the Vols’ second spring scrimmage Saturday at Neyland Stadium, he got a chance to catch up with Jones, defensive line coach Steve Stripling and Mark Elder, Tennessee’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, who’s serving as Tuttle’s primary recruiter.
“I watched film with Coach Strip’,” said Tuttle, who underwent surgery last month to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. “I just got to actually sit down and talk football with Coach Strip’. That was pretty cool. He just told me how he teaches his players and all that.
“He told me I’d be playing tackle, but I’d learn all the positions. And he showed me how they do things. (Stripling and I) talk pretty often. He’s put a lot of people in the NFL. He’s their coach, but then he’s going to look after you.”
Tuttle said he spent time with Tennessee freshman defensive lineman Dimarya Mixon and freshman cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, a native of Greensboro, N.C., during the visit. Tuttle said he played against Moseley’s Dudley High School team last season in the second round of North Carolina’s Class 4A playoffs.
Spending time with Mixon and Moseley allowed Tuttle to see that they ‘like their coaches,” he said.
Tuttle said he hasn’t “really narrowed things down” in his recruitment, and there are “not really” any teams standing out to him among the dozens of schools pursuing him. But he said he’s interested in Tennessee for multiple reasons.
“When I was at the (Tennessee-Georgia) game, it was the atmosphere. The crowd was behind them,” he said. “And their coaches are pretty good guys.”

Said he visited North Carolina the week before for one if their Spring practices. Also, will visit Fl St and Clemson.

Agreed we're hearing amount many more of these than in the past.

Begs the question why more labrum tears or are they now more easily identified whereas in the past you simply had a sore shoulder?

It is partly because a lot more high school athletes are weight training seriously.

Unfortunately, a poorly designed power-lifting regiment like those used by clueless HS S&C coaches will greatly increase shoulder instability and labrum tears.

Tennessee did well to get Tuttle on campus last week and from talking to several people in the region most believe that Tennessee, North Carolina and North Carolina State make up his top group as of now, but it's very early in Tuttle's decision making process.

It seems like a lot of the big time DT's are the ones announcing late this year. That'll probably ensue panic as the year goes along and we don't have DT commits yet.

FWIW, ESPN article Getting to know Shy Tuttle

With an offer list that reads like a who’s who of college football, finding the time to build relationships can be the toughest part of the equation. Headed into the spring evaluation period, there are some schools that Tuttle talks to the most.

“I’m staying in contact with about seven schools the most,” Tuttle said. “UNC, Clemson, Tennessee, NC State, Miami, Florida and Florida State are the schools that are coming at me the hardest.”

Currently rehabbing a left shoulder that required surgery and will keep him out of action until July, Tuttle is zeroing in on his recruitment, with plans to graduate high school in December.

About his recruitment: Tuttle is one of the more coveted interior line prospects in the class. While he could play end in a 3-4 scheme, it’s his ability to be a pass rushing tackle that has college coaches salivating. There are family ties to Clemson, where his uncle Perry Tuttle played for the Tigers and was a first-round NFL draft selection in 1982. His mom is a North Carolina fan according to Tuttle.

Handicapping the race: At this point, North Carolina has the decided edge of the schools closest to home, with Clemson and Tennessee lurking a little farther from home. Florida has a quality relationship with Tuttle as well. If his decision comes down to family and staying close to home, it will be the Tar Heels or Tigers. Should distance not play a factor, the Vols have Tuttle’s attention, with the mid-April visit to Florida State likely to be pivotal.

"Quick recruiting note...

Talked to Shy Tuttle tonight after we've missed each other this week after he visited last weekend and just wanted to throw some notes out there from our conversation, which wasn't very long as he was studying.

Anyways, Tuttle said he liked his Tennessee visit, his first time since being back on campus since the Vols played Georgia in the fall. He also was here back in the summer. But, he liked this visit as he felt like it was more about getting to know the coaches and spending time with those guys.

He said he talks with Elder almost every day and has really gotten to know him and is very comfortable with him.

Tuttle added he will definitely be back in the fall for a game.

Right now Tuttle said NC State (who is also recruiting his cousin and he visited there a couple of times recently), North Carolina, Tennessee, Clemson and Florida State are recruiting him the hardest.

He plans to narrow some things down this summer and go from there in the fall. I think Tennessee will be in this one for a while after talking to him tonight."
