'15 NC DT Shy Tuttle (UT commit 9/26/14)

😒.....huh????? You don't think Tuttle will get the start?

Tuttle starting as a freshman is not a given IMO as there will be 4 returning DT's. I do think he will be in the 2 deep rotation if he doesn't start. I think KM would start today if they could get him in school - he appears way more matured physically than Tuttle at this point. I'm very impressed how quickly Tuttle can run for his size!

Ladies and gentlemen! It's Mr. Shy Tuttle's commitment day! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!

Finally, we need to keep pressing. We cant have anymore slip ups in recruiting.

There will always be misses in recruiting...its an unexact science. You have 85 on scholarship but only around 50 play so the system is designed to account for those who don't pan out. The NFL is only allowed 53 players on their roster so if 25% of college recruits don't pan out there should still be enough players.

I wasnt talking about slip ups in terms of missing on players/guys not panning out, but rather failing to recruit our needs every year just because we landed great prospects the year before. We need to always land players who fit our scheme every year no matter how much depth we have. I wasn't very clear on that, but I just don't want to see something like us not recruiting a DT next year because we landed 3 this year. I hope that makes some sense lol:)

Per VQ, UT is very firmly the team to beat. UT has been the leader since the Summer. A lot of credit goes to Mark Elder on this one. He spearheaded Tuttle's recruitment.

Nice quote here...

"In terms of on the field impact, Tuttle will have a chance to be in the rotation next next year on the defensive line and he flashes obvious potential with his size and athleticism. To say this coaching staff is excited about the possibility of pairing Tuttle and Kahlil McKenzie together is an understatement."

They're not the only ones. Last years class was phenomenal but I think this one will end up being even more important. SEC games are won in the trenches and DT hauls don't get any better than this.

I hope our coaches are smart enough to think of that....

If Shy does infact pick the Vols this will be the best DT haul that I have ever seen as a UT fan. You win games in the trenches and McKenzie, Picou, and Tuttle are going to go along way into helping this team do just that. The future just keeps getting brighter and brighter with coach Jones manning the helm.

They will make a huge impact. The key will be to utilize all these outside weapons at OLB and DE and put them in places to provide quality pass rush. I'm very pleased with our defensive direction. I've been more critical on this board of Coach Jancek than anyone else I've seen. I believe it's time to lock our entire defensive staff down. We need to pay all of them what they want and keep this group together. I see something very special coming defensive wise at UT, and it's coming really soon.

Still, there are some concerns going forward. First, who's replacing AJ? Will it be MLB by committee, or is Cherry/Bryant going to take it over? Second, as good as we have recruited, we still need to find some more lock down corners so that we can man up and blitz when need be, paging Justin Martin...You can't effectively blitz if you can't man up on the outside, which forces you to have to zone blitz which is less effective IMO. Third, can we continue to find guys like Weatherd, Joe Henderson (when he's ready), and Maggit who can play standing up and down on the ground? Maggit, Weatherd, and Veeren on the field together is plan nasty. Unfourtantly, come 2016 when we are going to start really peaking as a team, neither Weatherd nor Maggit will be here :cray: It's important to replace these guys with players who have similar skill sets because they are vital in this defensive scheme. Like I said, Joe Henderson will be a very athletic pass rusher in due time, Ford is pretty athletic for this 2015 class, and he seams to be someone we can stand up on the line of scrimmage and pass rush. Past that, we don't have anymore SLB/WDE candidates. We need to continue to pursue this area of great need come 2016. I expect to see at the very least 3 LB prospects commit for 2016 and possibly more depending on the final results of this years class. Finally, we need to keep pressing. We cant have anymore slip ups in recruiting. CBJ and staff have built this great foundation, but that's not enough. We have to continue to build upon the foundation laid. As CBJ says, "Brick by Brick"
I suspect we'll be in great shape at DE for the next 4-5yrs.Barnett and Hendrix are going to prove to be All-SEC caliber Ends. Vareen is just a Sophomore. Henderson will be a big impact player....they are just red-shirting him to allow him to add the size needed.

I also think Maggit will be back next year, as well....unless he just goes off this year. Seems like with all the time rehabbing, and adjusting to a hybrid role, he is still going through an adjustment period.

We haven't even talked about the DE's in this class, yet. Butcher seems like (slightly shorter) a clone of Will Overstreet, and Ford is going to be a beast. I expect Kyle Phillips to commit at some point this season, if the staff wants to take him.

Yep. If we don't turn the corner in a big way this season, I suspect it will come next season with this class. That's just too much incoming talent to not make a major difference.

It's how FSU managed to get out of the funk they were in....an in for a LONG time. They were able to put together a few Top 5 classes...and BOOM! They burst onto the National scene. Same thing happened with Bama, when Saban came in. Had a few top classes and quickly changed course, as well.

@RivalsFriedman: Big day today w/ commitments from #Rivals100 DT Shy Tuttle & 4-star ATH Darrell Taylor. I'm thinking #Vols for Tuttle & #VT for Taylor
