'15 MD OT Pat Allen

Well since we are no longer talking about Pat Allen and a poster mentioned a comparison of Jack Jones vs Chad Clifton I thought I'd chime in. My school and Chad's were rivals only 15 miles apart and I had the opportunity to play against him from middle school through high school. Chad Clifton had a full beard at age 13. He was huge. And I am 6'4". He had violent hands just like Jack Jones does. Will Jack have a 14 year NFL career protecting Bret favre? No. Cause Brett is retired. Would Mahoney or Pittman have been a better coach to Chad? I doubt it would have mattered. Chad had a couple things you could not teach. Aside from his heart representing his home state he had a Michael Strayhan gap between his front teeth. You can't coach that. Can we get back to Allen?

Sorry for the mix up man i was on my phone then switched devices so i posted this in this thread instead of on the Prince thread. My bad

Youre good brother, i just wanted to clear it up because it seemed to confuse a few ppl lol carry on

I don't know...maybe because we had one of our best offensive years ever when Pittman was on the staff?

I didn't realize that Pittman was the QB coach, the OC, the RB coach and the WR coach. I remember that O-Line well and even though it did "good" it had a lot of problems. The point I was trying to make was that unless any two coaches are given exactly the same players under the same circumstances using the same offensive schemes you will not know which coach is actually better.

That is not really a valid arguement. Players almost always support the current coach, that goes for head or position. They have a comfort level with and know where they stand with that coach. A new coach comes in and they might lose their starting position, so it is in their interest to preserve the status quo. Gator players were supporting Muskrat this fall, even though the program was a dumpster fire.

It's 100% a valid argument. When CDD was fired we had three coaches worthy of staying, Jay, Pitt, and Chaney. Chaney left, and rightfully so, because he runs a power oriented offense. Jay left post NSD, and Pitt wasn't retained. So, with that said, IMO, it makes little sense why players would request for a coach to stay unless they really liked him. Every player has a chance to prove themselves to a new coach, where an old coach knows who you are already. From a player's perspective, there's a lot more advantages of a new coach coming in compared to an old coach staying, especially if you aren't getting playing time. It's for this very reason that I believe something should be said for an assistant coach when most his position players want him back, even when the team has lost two years in a row. I'll also add that I never once heard players wanting our defensive coaches back after the 2013 season. Losing usually means changes needed across the board, but apparently our OL players thought Pittman knew what he was doing. This is just my opinion, and I can see your position on this matter as well.

Maybe it is just me, but I cannot understand why a Vol fan would complain about Mahoney on Pat Allen thread. I certainly hope he isn't reading this.

I'm sure he'll take under consideration that it's just concerned fans who know a lot more than the coaches recruiting him. :)

How do you know he/she is a VOL fan. Sounds as if it may be a fan of a team other than Tennessee. However, we do have some fans who are not the brightest light in the room.

I can't believe some people still don't get it:

Pittman is a good pro-style, man blocking scheme, traditional OL coach but Butch runs a different system so he brought in Mahoney. For better or worse, Butch is married to his assistants and their uncompromising commitment to his infallible panacea of a system.

Ok. I like the panacea of a system so far. Way to go Butch!

Chaney has always favored a spread passing offense. That's what made his move to Arky so curious, since it's so different than what Bielema does.

He does run a spread, but he has always utilized a fullback in his system. His QBs also snap from both the shotgun and behind center. Chaney's system here was about as power oriented as you will find in college football these days. However, Arky's offense is the most power oriented offense you will see in college football. It works for them, but you have to recruit very good TEs and OL to make it work effectively.

Do tell us with your "vast" expertise as a fake internet expert as to why his system doesn't work? I will hang up and listen.

No offense - but Pittman has been running zone blocking schemes at least since his days at UNC through this past season at Arky. But your point about Mahoney is true - he has strong experience in this system so Butch went with his guy.

Appreciate the correction. Here's an excerpt from a February 2010 UNC scout article to further substantiate your position:

As it turns out, UNC was more of a zone-blocking team in 2009 than a gap-blocking team, and rarely employed man-blocking schemes. Offensive line coach Sam Pittman explains.
"Zone blocking teams want to cover their linemen," Pittman said. "I mean, that's the bottom line and that's why you saw us go towards a huge zone scheme towards the latter part of the year, because we wanted to cover our linemen for movement. So a lot of zone teams do that for movement.

Still not good enough for Butch though.

So do you think it's "better" or "worse"? Your description makes it sound like his system is something illegitimate or immoral.
