'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

Vontaze Burfict ran a 5.1 at the combine, he seemed to do okay.

You think that was the best 40 time Burfict ever ran? I'd suspect he said he ran poorly at the combine and was really a 4.7 - 4.8 guy. I recall last year the ND LB's 40 time being highly discussed concerning his draft status. Seems like he ran a 4.9+ at the combine but then followed it up with a 4.8 at the ND pro day.

Now Cherry may well be better than 5.1, but the norm would be for a recruit to list the best time they ever ran. Its certainly hard to believe all the 40 times and the weight lifting numbers provided by recruits in general.

Do you think a best of 5.1 is doable as an SEC LB? With all the RB's claiming 4.4 - 4.6 times and tight ends in the 4.6 - 4.8 range its reasonable to believe a LB limited to a 5.1 is at a distinct disadvantage?

Here is the thing...Cecil is a good ball player. But he is also a highlight reel...we love the big hits so keep them coming. However, he is a little slow...slower than AJ to be sure. The issue with Cecil is lack of speed, which I am sure will improve, and he really needs to learn proper tackling technique (being serious)...the guy can absolutely bring it but will get called for a ton of leading with helmet calls...once again something coaches will fix.

Uh you must not have watched the same video I did. He played some RB and he looked plenty fast. He is much faster than AJ. I really don't know where you are getting this. In the film I saw the guy was out running DBs.

Too early for the speed concerns. Plenty of time for Cecil to improve that. They can get him a .2 second faster with technique and start alone. This guy is a heavy hitter. He brings the sledge hammer. An opposing RB takes a few of those licks in a game and he is going to be looking to run sideways or go down quickly when Cecil comes around.

Rumor around these parts is that Cecil Cherry ran the 5.1 40 yard dash while beating up Chuck Norris... and had cinder blocks strapped to his feet... running backwards... with pads on... uphill.. under water

Give me a LB with instincts, burst, tackling ability, and general badassery over a fast 40 any day

Exactly. Times in the 40 don't measure heart or desire. And from what I've seen of him, he's got as much of those characteristics as anyone on the current roster. I'm also reasonably sure that in game situations, Cecil runs much faster than a 5.1 40. Welcome Cecil, and anyone you can bring along with you.

Still a little slow, IMO.

Wait a minute. What did you just say?

He is much faster than aj. And he does a good job reading the play and then stepping up or scraping down the line. He can flst out lay the would as well.

Holy Crap.
He makes people look like the dudes on Mike Tyson Punch out getting knocked out.
The way he stands them up from a down hill run is like a video game.
His footwork is good on D, but let's his body get ahead of him on the run plays as FB.

I bet he could block a hole for Hurd to Power the rest of the way through though.
I could see him in wild cat running a sweep, and tossing to Hurd and road blocking a DE.
Jeez he could make a SDE think twice about stepping in the back field.
The way he tackles, he leads with his whole forearm into the shoulder or upper chest.
Talk about setting the end, he would set the end on the sideline for the next few plays.
No way he plays FB for UT, but dang. Its nice to have versatility.
Any chance he plays DE though?
