'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

Theres a reason hes a MLB. If the other 10 players on the team are doing their job the MLB doesn't have to tackle a guy 10 feet from the sideline like AJ

FWIW, Cherry's results at the Orlando NFTC on 3/14:
* HT/WT: 6-0, 225
* 40: 4.98
* shuttle: 4.78
* power ball: 32.5'
* vertical jump: 28.0"
* SPARQ: 65.49
Orlando NFTC l Official Testing Results

That really isn't a bad time. If you look at the results, it appeared to be a very slow day. The fastest LB in attendance >200 pounds ran in the mid 4.8's.

George Campbell, who ran a 4.35 at the Opening last year, ran a 4.47. Only two times lower than 4.5.

This. Is a good post and very informed. Thank you MK

No ratings for instincts, tenacity, or viciousness?

The NFL is full of linebackers who were a step slow in the 40 yard dash. In fact I would say there are a lot more 4.8 and 4.9 40s than there are linebackers who are contact averse.

Cecil is not contact averse.

Cecil Cherry- 4.9 40 "It doesnt matter he's a middle linebacker! He's got great intangibles!"

A.J. Johnson, All SEC linebacker- "He's too slow! I can't wait until we get a real SEC MLB back there!"

I believe Cecil Cherry will be a great linebacker for us, and can't wait for him to be here. I just wish A.J. would get more respect than he does.

Good point.

I just wish AJ would hit as hard as Cecil does.

It is my opinion that AJ does WAY TOO much arm tackling. Most football enthusiast like their MLB to run through the ball carrier as if he was not there. AJ will always be VFL, but he tackling technique leaves A LOT to be desired.

He's got 138 and 106 tackles the last two seasons. As long as they are on the ground, I don't think it matters if he hits as hard or not.

I would much rather for the ball carrier to be knocked backwards or stood up at the line of scrimmage instead of being slung forward for positive yards. Believe me, if you get hit hard enough, you will think twice before running in that hole again.

I certainly believe he does when they come up the middle or near the line of scrimmage. Where he begins to arm tackle is when he has to cover the sidelines, where are OLBs and DBs who run 4.8s and 4.7s should be.

I remember that Marvin Mitchell ran in the 4.9s at the NFL combine and he was a hell of an MLB here, once he got his chance to play. I believe (not sure) that he is still in the league and has had a pretty successful pro career. I'm pretty sure he won a SB with saints. Fast 40 time is not required at all to be a good MLB.

"If a middle linebacker runs a 4.82 but he is instinctive and quick in a short area, the 40-yard dash time doesn't matter," one AFC general manager told Pompei. "At that position what matters is they are productive and make plays."

From when Manti Teo ran a 4.82 at the combine. They were saying he reached full speed at 20 yards and just maintained it.

Uh, I don't think so. Re watch the GA game.

You mean this game?

12 tackles, for 15th career double-figure tackles including 1.5 TFLs

Stats not included, he may have not made some plays you thought he should. You still shouldn't discredit a whole body of work because of one game. However, statistically he had a great game and we would have been much worse off without him.

Smh. You're completely missing the point. A MLB stuffs a RB in the hole and stops forward momentum, and the great ones drive him backwards. With all due respect to AJ, who is a VFL no doubt, he grabs them up high and slings them, no matter where he is on the field. Most of those tackles results in the offensive player going forwards for an extra 2-3 or more yards. If he stuffs it, then less yards are given up, which is huge over the course of many plays. Stats sometimes do not tell the whole story. I really hope Thig shows AJ proper tackling technique for a MLB, and gets him to stop that slinging junk.
