'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

I was impressed with Bynum last night. Gotta love the guys that keep working hard without the spotlight on them & then shine when they get their chance.
Jakob Johnson and Kenneth Bynum are not viable options. Hard to tell with Bryant because he was redshirted. McDowell did a good job on special teams from what I noticed. Not sure what Elliot Berry brings to the table. Of the guys mentioned, I think Kirkland is a different breed. Last MLB that started as a freshman (AJ Johnson) ended up being a good one.

Darrin Kirkland Jr.
Inside Linebacker
Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central

Kirkland was the man in the middle for the West defense. He showed the ability to reach the sidelines and he was also able to shoot into the backfield to make a few plays. Kirkland, who will enroll early at Tennessee, finished the day with four tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss.

So you can't tell about Bryant, but JJ who has played less football than anybody on the team, ISN'T a viable option after getting tossed in suddenly due to a suspension? You're either the worlds greatest talent scout or completely full of $h!t. Guess which one my money is on?

Jakob Johnson is the most freakish athlete on the team..When he learns how to play and where to be.he is going to be great. The dude has the speed and size to play everywhere but Dt and Db

This is all exactly right. Most plays he's missed he's been right there on but hasn't learned to look back for the ball. He's big and fast and needs to be out there somewhere once he starts to get the small things down.

This. JRM, Bates, McDowell, Bryant, Bynum, and maybe even JJ will play before Kirkland.
Says who? No one thought Barnett would play this year (redshirt candidate), let alone start at DE and be one of the SEC's best. Kirkland is the kind of player who could make a case for himself, like AJ did when he came in.

Typically you want upperclassmen holding things down, but they will have to show they are a better player. We have enough depth at LB, that I hope the staff moves McDowell back to SS.

Well, I'm not the world's greatest talent scout but I do get paid to evaluate talent and recruit. Hate to say it but Jakob will be recruited over pretty quickly.

He seems like the kind of kid who is in it at Tennessee for the long haul. If possible, I think a redshirt year could be big for him. He has the tools, he just needs to get more of a feel for the game.

I think before it's all said and done he'll be a good contributor somewhere in our front 7.

So you are a talent scout..Mike Shula is a NFL OC...if you dont see JJs talent you are one blind mofofosho..have a nice day.

Definitely needs a redshirt year to have a shot. Will be tough for him to contribute at MLB. DE would probably be his best bet.

Now that I can agree on. However I think he can play a LB spot when he learns the game better. You cant coach that kind of God given combination of size speed and agility.

When I was in high school, our most freakish athlete was by far not out best football player... He just couldn't figure it out

He needs to be moved to DE. I bet he would be good there looking at his size and speed.

Plus he wouldn't have as many reads to make. But with all the talent we are bringing in on the D line we should leave him at LB and he will make plays on special teams.

Hes only played football a few years anyway.

This. Mike is a position that a freshmen could come in and play if he can make plays. Staff would probably put front call responsibilities on OLB that has more experience getting everyone lined up!

Barnett had no one in front of him. Kirkland has several 4* guys in front of him.

I get that, but it has nothing to do with this. JJ is not a dumba**, he is just woefully inexperienced. That just takes time. Hell I never thought AJ was going to get it figured out either, but he sure as hell did this year.
