'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

I won't say anything else about Jakob. I wish him the best. Excited about Kirkland and hope for a great 2015 season!

I agree and disagree with you about JJ. I agree he will be recruited over very quickly at MLB and will probably never really contribute there.

However, I disagree that he couldn't develop into a down lineman on the front 7 after putting on some weight. Maybe not, but if he has a future contributung, that is his spot.

I still think putting Bates at MLB negates his greatest strength- pass coverage.

Just saying the same thing to my brothers a couple days ago. He can be elite on pass coverage. His potential is mighty. All these recruits with ability and potential getting a year older, bigger and stronger are going to be awesome to watch

NAIA school in Kentucky
I went on recruiting visits to Campbellsville and Kentucky Christian. I ultimately decided that I would rather go to Tennessee than play at a small school. If you work at Campbellsville... you guys are doing a great job on those visits. If you work at KCU... not so much. A lot of the recruits there thought it was really weird that they weren't allowed to sell gum on KCU's campus, and one guy took a dump in a urinal.

I usually don't post my past but for this I will.

I was all-state and All-american ILB.out of highschool . I was all confreence as a true freshman and blew out my knee and career was over .

I say this just because I know the position.
JJ needs a redshirt year if he want to play ILB. The position calls for reading the defense and being in the right place at the right time. The only way to get there is reps.

D league coach saying he's failed experiment is 100% wrong. JJ has as much God given tallent as anyone in the SEC. He's big and he's fast. He also seems like a smart kid but he hasn't played the game long enough.

His problem when he started was he was always out of position. I didn't see him fill the right gaps. If he has a redshirt year to learn the game he could be special.

I can guarentee you if Barnett or Hurd were in their second year of football neither would make an impact.

Thank you for the post. Our experience is similar and this guy claiming to be a scout is either incompetent or lying about his profession. No one knows what will become of JJ but there is no way you could call him a failed experiment after a freshman year. He is an athletic freak.

Well said. MLB takes a lot of knowledge and experience that he doesn't have yet. Thanks for chiming in.

Coach Doug Mathews said this on his show today also. :good!:

JJ is athletically gifted but would be nice to RS him next year for development. Should have had that chance this year.

RS for DKjr would also be nice unless he is absolutely ready to compete for PT or on special teams.

Ideal LB rotation next year would be JRM, Bates, McDowell, Bryant w/ Maggitt / Weatherd working hybrid.

Butch even said JJ really needed to redshirt this year but they were not in a situation to do that. Talent is there but the mental part slows him down. JJ is one of those guys that you see explode on the scene their JR year

Kid is a rare MLB prospect that can play early. Plus he's an EE which is huge for him at his position.
