'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

I'm still not counting Cherry a TX commit. Yes, I know all signs point to that playing out. I look at it and ask myself with it being VERY clear that Cherry has moved on from our Vols, why not just de-commit and announce for TX? Why the talk of waiting till NSD? Is Mr. Cherry sure that TX is going to take him or are they putting him on hold till closer to NSD? TX has won 4 out of their last 5 I think. If they win another game or 2 and another MLB possibly an instate kid wants to commit, does Cherry lose that spot? IMO Cherry waiting till NSD(if it is his choice) could end up somewhere other than TX or TN.

Not trying to look at this through orange tinted glasses, but with the momentum we have right now, in addition to AJ Johnson being labeled "too slow" to play MLB, we probably encouraged him to take a look around so we could get in on a better all around prospect.

This is why I STFU if I'm Cherry. I mean you're painting yourself into a corner with all that negativity. Of course that hasn't mattered in the past to the staff.

Our staff has a business like approach to recruiting and doesn't take anything personally which I like. You're exactly right that they let some nasty comments from Robertson and Sawyers wash in the last cycle. Still, Cherry seems intent on burning this bridge. If it's not Texas for him, it will be Clemson.

Florida could be in play as well. We'll see.

No, I knew that's what you meant. My point is that, like many of the positions on our team, we are forced to be playing a true freshman in this position when the starter is unable to play. To me, that makes it a position that is critical to fill in this cycle.

Kirkland is absolutely a must get.

I think he has the ability to win the job as a true freshman.

Most likely though he will provide depth- like you just suggested

This conversation is going to be interesting after this Saturday, because of Jacob Johnson. I haven't really paid a lot of attention to him or scouted him.

I felt next year it would be Bates and Maybin on the field at the same time. I still feel that way right now. Either way, yeah we have to get Kirkland if he wants to come here... kid is a monster talent.

No way Kirkland wins the job at Mike as a Freshman. Jakob and Bryant will battle it out. He'd likely be 3rd at best on the depth chart. Maybe fourth if Bynum doesn't transfer

Gavin is a Sam with the ability to move into Mike. He is an every down LB along with Dillon. Kirkland is the AJJ and Jakob replacement, if Jakob goes to Leo when Curt leaves. Kirkland could also play the Sam. May be an every down guy as well. FWIW IMO.

This might be the worst post in volnation history.

Ideally this is what I would do if I were Jancek.

This is what intrigues me most about Saturday. What if Jacob comes out an opens some eyes? What if it becomes clear that he is future All-American at MLB?? We still get Kirkland, to push him. I'm pretty high on Kirkland

Bryant is a SAM in a base 4-3, but we really like that 4-2-5 nickel with the Leo. More speed. So Bryant will push at MLB

I think all the Lb's we have are everydown Lb's except for maybe Berry?

I love all of them though. Bates, McDowell, Weatherd, Berry, Bryant,...and Maybin is a top 5 Lb in the conference imo

If he cancels the TX/USC trips coming out of the weekend, I think he is. He takes those trips and IMO there is no reason to call him a silent at that point. If taking a trip to TX cost Cherry his spot, I doubt CBJ takes Kirkland's commitment and then sits back while he takes a trip to TX. JMO

I hate sometimes to agree with Leb but was getting ready to post something about how can it make us look at others when Cherry decided to go to Tex but we will let this guy do it. Big difference is Cherry had committed and so we were not as active in looking at MLB's and Kirkland is not officially. I think they will take his commitment but will not do so if he takes those visits. They will continue looking at others if that happens.

I think if he wants to be a Vol 100 percent for sure then he needs to not take those visits.

For us being critical of Cherry. Stop and think about how much you love the Vols. If this is a Mouhan type of thing and all of a sudden you realized what you just lost by flirting with the other girl a little who was making you excited while your super hot girl had her back turned. Would you not feel stupid and upset about it. I can see how he would have this reaction. He may be more upset that he got a rise while flirting with a 6 and lost out on his 10. At 18, he would be pissed at everything. Then what if the 6 leaves him for someone else. The kid may be to blame for flirting but understand him being upset. If he was happy about it, it would make him laugh not be mad.

I don't see Bynum keeping a guy like Kirkland off of the field even as a freshman. I personally think Jakob, Bryant, and Kirkland (assuming we get him) will all battle it out for the starting MLB position. I'm interested to see how JJ and Bryant progress. They both have the potential to win the job and be good LBs but I think Kirkland has more potential than both of them and will eventually win the job in the future (not necessarily next year but in a couple years I think he would). It will just be hard for him to win the position over two guys who have a year in the system and college S&C program.

Either way I think we will be just fine at the Mike position next year, there will be a drop off from losing AJ's experience and leadership but we will fill it with a talented player. And most importantly we finally have quality depth at the position incase someone goes down with an injury. This staff can recruit that's for sure.

I'd be shocked if Jakob didn't have the starting job locked up with Bryant in coming in for double ILB situations. Kirkland will definitely be getting his reps though. Will be the starter one day. Great problem to have.

EDIT: Bryant is redshirting, correct?

He is a player too

That's what I hear as well. Maybe he's waiting on Pappy to pay the phone bill so he can call and decommit.

I'm ok with someone making this comment as long as they sent Cherry their address. Vol or not you don't want to meet him over the middle.
