There should be objective monitoring of AP poll voters' acumen, and each year the bottom 10% ought to be kicked out and their ballots given to alternates waiting in the wings for a chance.
Something like this: a voter's ballot for each and every week is compared to the year's final poll results. And for each position the voter was off with each team it's one point against them. For instance, if Tennessee ends the year ranked #4, then the voter who put the Vols #8 in the pre-season gets negative 4 points. Another -4 when they keep the Vols at #8 in week 2. And so on. Do that for every team in the final poll, for every voter. Sounds like a lot of work, but the computers can count it all up in milliseconds.
If there are, say 60 poll voters, the bottom 10% (meaning the bottom 6), the six with the biggest negative score, they get kicked off and new blood gets let in.
Over time, this will not only clean up the sleepwalkers and homers, but it will also add some prestige to being an AP poll voter. More folks will want to be one, which will enrich the pool of candidates, which will eventually make the poll even better.
This is such a good idea, it makes me wonder why they're not already doing something like it.
Go Vols!
