Why do they still keep him?

IMO, coach Johnson is a very good coach and a overall good guy to represent the school. His problem is recruiting elite athletes to run his offense. Again, recruiting really hurts him, he deals with a lot of negative recruiting because of the offense he runs and it's obvious that he hates the sideshow that college recruiting has become. He has also been killed by having a terrible defense year after year. But Tech is not the kind of school with a crazy fan base like the majority of SEC schools do.

They don't care in the GT admin .. it's just another job to fill for them. And it takes the fan base a LONG time to get fed up enough to throw down their calculators and protractors in protest.

Johnson wins games because he runs an offense that people have only a week to prepare. He needs to recruit better than average QBs who can run the option, and RBs with speed and strength. If his teams get behind early, it is usually a long day for GT.

CE's ask.fm account has been mentioned on here before. I went and checked it out and two things stuck out.

1) He does like to have a little fun with keeping everyone guessing

2) There are some very negative Vol fans or Vol fan imposters that are being extremely inappropriate

Irony here. They could have been Stanford-esque had they stayed.

I think I read something like this in the AJC, actually. He was grousing about recruiting and saying something to the effect of how Auburn and Georgia have already picked over GT's prime recruiting grounds and so he has to settle for lower ranked guys, but how those guys are just as good. It sounded pretty pathetic.

GT could do MUCH better but their administration just doesnt seem to care if they are good in football or not. But realistically they could/should be one of the Top ACC programs year in and year out. Very good academics and a great location in terms of there being top notch talent all over your backyard.

I am wondering if there might be any chance that we need this "BIG UGLY". Have you guys heard anything?

The question is whether a down GT is good or bad for UT? On one hand, they could bring down UGA. On the other hand, they could get some of our Georgia prospects.

It's funny because I know GT fans. It's like they are in limbo with Paul Johnson. They get 5-8 wins a year because of their scheme and athletes. They don't recruit well but they get guys who can run on offense and stout guys on defense. It's like they are stuck in an average cycle and they don't fire anyone because he does "okay" and reaches a bowl a lot and even an ACC CG game every once in a while with 4+ losses lol. I'd HATE being a GT fan

Actually, they've made 17 straight bowl games.

Well good for them. How many are of the BCS variety? What about conference championships? Just an average program that is satisfied with being average.

I rarely google facts before I make a point. I was 3 when that streak started so it's not something I'm too familiar with.

If GA Tech could ever get a coach that could recruit with the big boys, I could see them turning into somewhat of a powerhouse in the ACC.

Place is the jam.

Best friend is a GT fan and he's going to the Orange and White game with us Saturday and I'm going to GT's spring game next Friday. Gonna have a great buzz before the game and then gonna hit up the varsity. It's a pregame ritual for me lol

This.

Sleeping giant in ACC with the right coach.

Their biggest problem in recruiting is perception in the state. The majority of high school players and coaches in the state don't respect GT as a program and see the school as a weird place. GT started a twitter campaign called "the migration" aimed at targeting players from the north who might not think so little of Tech since they couldn't get any of the top players in Georgia.

The new coach will have a major challenge changing that perception. That challenge will be made more difficult if they shift back to a more conventional scheme and have a few very bad years without decent personnel in place.

Hi, Devil's advocate here. Don't you think, at least in the beginning, switching scheme's may help them with recruiting?

Sure, but it would be a couple years at least until those players started to make a significant impact. In that dead period, GT's looking at 2-4 win seasons. Their talent level is really low.

So say they switch schemes and see some immediate recruiting benefits. Then they go 3-9 or something and kill whatever recruiting momentum they may have had. They will have a tough time stacking good classes together to take the next step in the short term imo.
