I'm trying to temper my expectations, but I'll be damned if these updates don't get me hype

I'm with you. I feel like the first time we have a back like Lattimore or Richardson or Gurley. L which is something we have been missing for 5 years. A long time not to have an elite back

Still runs high and whether it's reported or not he's battling with going from a big kid in a small town to a locker-room full of other extremely talented individuals. Most kids go through this transition, but it's a little tougher on Jalen but I believe that him being an EE will help him get over quicker than usual. He only has a few things between his ears that are keeping him from playing at full speed, and when I say "full" I mean wowing onlookers with his exceptional combination of size and speed.

This came from a couple of his team mates, but everyone is behind him and pushing him forward. Personally, I think the battle between Just-P, Lane, Paulk, Scott, Hurd, Hill, and Beck is gonna be a fun one to watch. The chemistry between these guys (on and off the field) is night and day different from last year.

So basically.. He's a freshman? Word

ALL of the freshmen are going through their share of problems right now. Malone broke down in the locker room in front of the entire team after the scrimmage Friday, but what does that mean? It means NOTHING! EVERY kid, no matter how great they were in high school, has to go through an adjustment period before they feel physically & mentally ready to compete in this conference. Jakob Johnson is another physical specimen that is struggling terribly to understand the mental side of this game right now too. So, while we have amazing talent on The Hill now, these kids are going to make that transition into SEC football when "they're" ready.

I was told that all freshmen feel this way, and it takes defining moments before they feel like they "belong" in this conference. It will take some of the guys longer than others, but it will happen.

Hurd has been in his head because he hasn't played football in 2 years, has only lifted weights and went through drills, and was unsure how his game would translate to the next level. All he wanted to do was "play" football for a very long time. He finally got that chance on Friday, and not only did he show the coaches & onlookers what he brings to the team, he proved to himself - had that defining moment - that he belongs here. He's gained the confidence that he needs to be able to move forward and become a better football player. Will he still mess up & get frustrated, learn & adjust, and continue to improve his game over time? Of course, he will. They all will.

Great post. But, uh, do you feel comfortable elaborating on the bolded part?

Malone struggled in the scrimmage pretty bad. First pass of the game was a good throw by Worley Bird that Josh dropped. My guess is Josh was giving himself a hard time after an overall not great performance because he's used to being the man. JMO I'd love to see 74's response as well

No knock on Josh or any of our guys - I promise. I feel for the kids, and I can only imagine what they're all going through right now. My only point for adding tidbits about Josh & Jakob is that it's not easy for ANY of these guys no matter how they're represented by the media & the fans. We can sometimes readily forget their age & lack of experience and immediately categorize them as a "bust" or "not really that good" if they don't perform to our expectations.

So, when a person comments that "he's battling with going from a big kid in a small town to a locker-room full of other extremely talented individuals", I would say that's absolutely normal and that they're all going through their share of adjusting right now. It's a part of the process, and it should be expected.

A few weeks ago, Hurd told his parents that "maybe football wasn't for him anymore and that felt like he lost it". Good thing he's moved past that, huh?:)

I cannot even begin to imagine the pressure that these kids put on themselves, not to mention the pressure from coaches and we fans.

Up to this point in their careers, I would imagine it's been relatively "easy" for them when it came to the game. Now they are having to learn so much more about the nuances of their positions than they probably imagined even existed. I can certainly understand the self-doubt.

Hell, I doubt myself in my job often, and I'M OVER 40! I'M A MAN!!!:)

Thanks, Vol74. Crazy to hear that about Hurd, although I imagine lots of stud players feel the same way their freshmen years. Probably happens in the NFL too.

FWIW I agree with both of your posts about this, and was basically saying the same thing. Each of these kids goes through the same adjustment, but some kids are used to playing bigger, better, and faster competition so the edge is gained a little easier. In no way was I downing the kid, just a little surprised, especially being that he told his parents that. Like I said before, him eing and EE will help this process move faster and make him more ready for summer practice. :salute:

One week of practice he wanting to quit?

There are days that they ALL want to quit or feel that they don't belong until they have defining moments when they realize that they do. Every freshman goes through it. Kind the point of the whole conversation....

I am sure most people have done things in their life and felt like this. Just that it would be easier to just be a normal student or whatever and not worry about it. No shame in being a normal person. Those that really want it will dust themselves off and come back the next day ready to work hard and be the best they can be. I hope all of those kids know how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make in their lives to bring us UT Football.
