I can understand a few of the reasons, but I bet he gets a sizeable bump later in the fall.

Breakdown:*When looking at Gauldin and whether it is in person or on tape, you see a defensive back with potential and upside. He is a lean safety right now and he will have to bulk up to play in the SEC, but he is not afraid to stick his hat in there and play physical. He has good football speed and he is solid in coverage. He plays more off the ball than on the ball when talking coverages. He has long arms, he is fluid, and he is good at recognizing things quickly.

Size-Strength-Speed
Displays close to ideal height but will need to add bulk to hold up playing in the box and avoid being engulfed by bigger, stronger blockers at the next level. Still has good, wiry strength and explosive pop to his frame. Has good speed and takes sharp pursuit angles to cover ground from sideline-to-sideline.

Instincts/Recognition
At times he can be a second late in his diagnosing but overall reacts to what he sees in both the run and pass effectively and takes good positioning. His instincts will take him to the football. He anticipates well and is fluid enough to open hips out of a tight backpedal and transition quickly to break over the top of routes.

Coverage Skills
Despite not having prototypical measurables for a safety prospect, he masks that with an aggressive, physical style of play and the ability to produce on all three levels of the defense. Angles are generally sound in his pursuit and he will rarely get caught out of position. Does not show a lot of man-to-man experience but has the athletic ability to match-up with slot receivers from depth or aligned in press. Possesses the movement skills to turn and run with receivers when in press or mirror from depth and closes the cushion quickly on underneath routes. Possesses good plant-and-drive skill.


Run Support
He tracks the ball well from depth with direct angles in pursuit giving him the ability to stay on track and fit up well to deliver a big hit on ball carrier. He has good range to chase down plays running the alley and setting the edge. Shows the ability to read blocks to work through traffic and generally keeps his frame free to locate the ball carrier. Runs through with good explosion as a tackler with shows solid wrap ability.

Bottom Line
Gaulden has upside and could be a real physical presence in college once he adds the required size and strength to his frame to match his aggressive style of play. If he can bulk up and polish his skill set in some areas we see a quality safety at the BCS level.
