'14 KY DT Matt Elam

I agree. This kid needs to lose a ****load of weight to contribute. He's fat as hell. I really don't know what 247 sees in him.

Yeah I'm with you. JMO but I think 247 gave him the Saban bump. Alabama wants him then he must be a 5 star. I'm not half the talent evaluator the guys at 247 are but I think it's obvious he's got a lot to do if he wants to be an all-sec caliber player.

I mean, he may turn out to be a beast down the road but judging by his body and film it looks like it may take a couple of years in a S&C program before he's strong and quick enough to battle SEC O-linemen. He really shouldn't warrant 5 star status. Hell, everyone here mad a big deal out of Mosely's weight and he looks like a damn Olympic powerlifter compared to Elam.

When I think of a 5 star, I think of a guy like Berry or Carl Lawson that can come in immediately and make an impact. You could see their potential in their very first game. Not some guy that *might* be a force by his junior year. JMO

does UK run a 3-4? thats what this guy will have to play in. this kid is slow as molasses and extremely out of shape. 5 star means immediate impact and thats not going to be the case with this kid

They run a 4-3 IIRC. Which is gonna make it even tougher for Elam to make an impact.

At least fatasses can do something in a 3-4, as we have seen before firsthand.

What kills me is the inconsistency. This guy is being rated as such for his potential, despite his current condition. However, other prospects suffer because they are deemed too small, weak, slow, grades, etc. And not what their potential is in a S&C program.

I agree. Look at Gaulden's rating on 247 for example. He's a mid 3 star and their only reasoning for that rating is that he didn't play his Jr. year of high school. Nevermind the fact that he averaged like 20 tackles per game and looks like a bonafide stud on all of his highlight films.

Cory Thomas looks like a beast compared to Elam yet he's a mid 3 star on 247. No one could convince me that Elam is a better player than him now or will be in 2 years. Again, JMO.

hell you cant convince me that this kid is a better prospect than Jashon Robertson. Especially from a versatility, athleticism, and strength standpoint. J rob fits any scheme, any side of the ball and is the strongest freshman DL we have coming in by far. this kids rating is a joke.

Exactly.

The hate is real lol.

Kid is obviously big but he is quicker than he looks. He surprised me when I watched him. Needs to lose about 30 pounds and get in the weight room. Rating is a bit inflated, but he's a player that can become a solid piece of the defense.

I agree too. He's not gonna beat most with his versatility or athleticism.

That being said, if he can get stronger and faster maybe he can open it up for the playmakers like Z Smith, etc by clogging the middle.

The Evals I read on Elam during Army AA week were pretty bad. Of course 247 was the site continually making excuses for him during that week, I guess to save face with their ranking of him. Plus the guy is built to be an NG in a 3-4. No clue what he's doing going to a school that run a 4-3. Strange all the way around IMO.

Yes, he was so terrible that Saban was slobbering all over him last week.

Big pickup for the Cats, and a solid class for Stoops.

Good post. Agree 100%. Not a fan of 247, but all of them have some screwy rationale occasionally. That's why I trust the coaching staff until proven otherwise.

Yep.

Good pick up for Kentucky. Would rather have seen him in UT orange, but the fact he won't be wearing Bama red is just about as good.

Thanks. Agreed better than Bama. But it is hard to accept UK recruiting like they are - don't want them to rise up and become competitive like USCjr has done.

I miss the 90's when the SEC was full of 6-7 doormats every season.

These rating services seem hesitant to ever want to change an initial assessment of a recruit. And Lord help him if he doesn't attend one of their camps. They'll find some reason to keep him low or high. At that point, it's just about maintaining "face" among other recruiting services instead of admitting they made a mistake the first go around IMO.
