'14 JUCO DT Davonte Lambert (Auburn Commit 12/18/13)

Not to derail this thread, but I think you can... if you have an elite coach. Petrino did very well at Arkansas and they weren't exactly setting the world on fire with recruiting. South Carolina has been the second or third best team in the SEC over the last three years without top rated classes (although Spurrier's clearly landed a few elite recruits along the way). With some notable exceptions (e.g., Clowney), Dooley arguably recruited at a similar level to both of them, from a simple Rivals rating standpoint.

But, regardless - Dooley clearly was not an elite coach, so he wasn't helping himself by not always signing elite talent.

Did Petrino or Spurrier ever come close to winning the SEC at Arkansas or USCe?

also you can not win the SEC and still win the natnl title - see bama

winning the SEC is not an easy feat and you can be a great coach and have a great year w/o winning the SEC

Petrino had a key transfer and did have a Top 20 class at Arkansas. He had some very good WR's that he developed. Overall, he didn't have great classes though.

In the BCS era it has been harder to win the SECC than the NC. For the most part, winning the SECC meant you were going to be NC.

yes, were right in at halftime of auburn game - lucky hail mary type play at end of half helped give auburn the game

We were in a lot of games, doesn't mean we were ever close of beating that opponent. Talent wins out 90% of the time. Auburn's talent overwhelmed South Carolina in the 2nd half to the tune of 28-3.

The point is if you don't have good talent, you are going to be 8-4, 9-3... may even back into the SECCG if your division is down. But you are still not good enough to beat the upper echelon consistently with lesser talent and great coaching.

The only crystal ball pick you want to look at is Rusty Mansell for Lambert. He has covered him since HS. He was close to flipping his pick last week and if he does it means he heard something very solid in TN favor. I wouldn't worry about the other analyst in this case.

Picked up 2 predictions from Mansell and Ryan to those VOLS just now on 247

calling Bs on this . There was a ton BEFOREthe Florida debacle last year. other than that, your spot on.

Your right there was hope and excitement but just overall and I really didnt have much confidence in Dooley not to screw up or to actually be able to beat someone he shouldnt. But your right, after the NC St game I had hopes that we could beat UF finally but that didnt last long.
