'14 GA CB D.J. Smith

It feels nice that we are in on a lot of other prospects, but getting dropped by one of his caliber isn't a good thing. We also shouldn't assume someone else committed silently or whatever and that's the reason UT is out of the mix.

Did he drop us or something? I haven't read that and the vq didn't say anything about him dropping us.

I really think that this staff is smart. They are not going to throw their pearls before swine. I believe they are going to target a guy, give him all the information they can, try to build that relationship with him, get him on campus, evaluate him, give him a tour, talk to momma, but if they have done all they can do and the kid is not pouring with love and excitement for UT, they're gonna go on to the next guy. It's like trying to convince a girl to marry you after you've dated for a long time. If the girl isn't sold, how else are you going to convince her?

Yes, Butch has gotta win on the field, and that will help. But he wants kids that are in love with Tennessee and are gonna fight with pride even if the record isn't what it should be. But I think Butch and staff puts all the cards on the table and says, "alright, poop or get off the pot."

"If you don't know UT by now...you will never know."

I think that it's not a matter of us not taking McDowell or Truitt or
Smith or Green. It's a matter of not waiting on them to be left standing at the altar. If they want to be Vols, it's probably only a phone call away. But think about it.
Tennessee will develop an attitude among recruits, that if Tennessee offers, you better accept, because they can always find someone to replace you. They are a top notch institution and they can get anyone they want, so if they tell you they want you, you better jump on board quick."

Isn't that we want?

he holds an offer, and 247 has them listed as warm. he and Green have also talked about wanting to play together

There are USC insiders who prefer Truitt. I think it is who commits first which is why Smalls may committ this weekend. Truitt may have done himself some harm(speculative) with USC by missing one of their big recruiting days, and Smith came into the picture as well as others.

The problem with recruiting today is that we have given too much power to a 17-18 year old kid who has never played college ball. Many of them are good athletes, but we invest so much time and effort and money into making their egos huge because we want to wait around for them like our football program depends on their decision. Tennessee football will be better if we don't sit around and just wait for a kid to pledge for us. That gives the recruit the power. If we can take that power back, and make it clear that we are going to fill our class with talent, and you are either going to be part of it or you're not, but either way, we will be Tennessee football, then we make it clear that we are in control again. And believe it or not, that's positive. It's just like all American games. Nobody has to beg a kid to
Come, they send out invitations and either you accept or they will find someone else. It's a lucky few. No recruit says, "nah, I don't wanna be an all
American." Human nature says when you put restrictions on admission to something, the best always want to be a part of it." We seem to be taking that route. I like it. Dooley pursued to the end on SOME players, and it occasionally paid off. But I like this we ain't desperate approach

And winning only helps that. When you know you can be a part of a incredible product on the field, it only
Makes them want to line up
More. Why do you think Alabama had 16 QBs competing for one spot?

Well he's got good size and the fact that he's a 4star says he's got the talent but if his decision is going to be made by who gives him the most attention then I'm not upset at all. I want kids that want to be here and will give their all to make the Vols better. We don't need any more kids that only came here because we gave them more attention than anyone else and will become a problem in the locker room once he gets here and the attention stops and he is forced to earn his spot rather than being handed it.

Completely agree. You would think that some of these kids would see through it. But, at 17-18 years old, I guess that is easier said than done.

Some posters really bother me. They think that kids shouldn't like the school that shows the most love. Who goes to a school where they don't like you? When we pull a kid and have shown him a lot of love our fans say nothing. When it's another school winning the recruiting battle now the kid will be an attention seeker and locker room problem. Get outta here with that nonsense......

I agree with breaker on this. And I also have had problems with everyone saying a player is a Vol lock because there have been two or three dozen Vol locks that have went elsewhere the last few years. Wesley Green had UT way out in front and was consider by many as a Vol lock but he committed elsewhere. I wish DJ Smith would commit already because we are the current leader and the longer he waits the less likely he becomes a Vol. we were in great shape to land several top 150 or so db 2 months ago and now there are a lot more offers to other db,s which to me it looks like the coaches are not as sure about those top prospects.
