"I got a lot of my mentality from my dad," Dillon Bates said. "I take his mentality to the field. Mr. Irvin tells me about how tough my dad used to be, and we watch his old highlights -- we have them on a DVD and they are old and in black and white -- I try to take that style and bring it to games with me."
And when the subject of "being like dad" comes up, the most generic question is raised. Will Dillon Bates eventually pull a Bill Bates and carve out a niche at the University of Tennessee?
"It makes it appealing," Dillon said. "And we have family in Knoxville still, so that's a big thing. It's on the list of schools that I really want to get to for junior days and all that stuff. But I'm going to check out other schools, too. Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Ohio State
a bunch of others. I just really want to weigh my options and see what's the best fit for me."
