'13 VA RB Derrick Green (Michigan commit)

There isn't confirmation that he is our coach. How do you know what kind of playbook he would run?

Hence the if, spaz. Everyone in the Gruden corner is saying he's converted to the spread, so i was asking if that's true, and assuming we get Gruden, would a power back like DG want that type of offense.

I believe there has been some mention of Gruden talking with Kelly at Oregon about his offense. Even with that though I don't see Gruden changing to a full on spread, maybe a multiple package offense with a little spread and a little pro style, which if taught correctly is extremely dangerous. That being said we still don't know anything solid about Gruden and all that is in the air is speculation, but I personally believe it's within the realm of possibility that we get Gruden but I'm not holding my breath either.

No spaz here. I ask questions just like you do.

:hi:

Someone can correct me, but I think DG's HS team runs a spread offense

If Gruden is truly serious about our position and has been for quite some time as many have reported, it is entirely possible that his week-long session with Chip Kelly was pursued, in part, for the purposes of gaining insight about how best to defend the spread offense. I am sure that all of you recall the difficulty that Gruden's old DC, Monte Kiffin, had adapting to the challenges posed by spread offenses, given the fact that he had not previously dealt with them in the NFL.

Considering Tennessee plays Oregon next year, it'd be funny to see Kelly sharing a wealth of knowledge to someone he could see across the field in less than a year. Just my two cents.

Excellent point. It would be interesting, indeed, to know how Gruden prefaced his desire to discuss the spread offense with Kelly, considering it isn't likely to migrate in a full-fledged form to the NFL anytime soon. In a video clip which has been linked to this forum, however, Gruden does mention spending a considerable amount of time discussing the principles of that offense with Kelly.

How would a guy that you really don't have to face year in and year out bother you to come up to talk about your system?

Also how would Chip Kelly know Gruden would be possibly coaching UT before the season?

1) I just said it'd be funny. Nothing more. Nowhere did I insinuate Kelly getting bothered. It'd be ironic if it turned out that Gruden was our next head coach and faced Chip Kelly next season after picking up tips from him. How would it not be?

2) This whole conversation was based on the assumption that Gruden was picking up scheming pointers to prepare for a potential job in the college ranks. Under that assumption, Chip Kelly likely has an idea where Gruden is going.

Gruden has spent time attending several camps and talking with college coaches over the last few years. Doesn't mean that he has adopted a spread offense philosophy. Offense is his specialty.

Yeah I getcha, you gotta love the dedication that Gruden has for the game of football, he can seem like a know-it-all on MNF sometimes but you have to admire that in a coach. Coaches, just like players, need to be a student of the game.

Richmond (Va.) Hermitage running back Derrick Green is in an interesting position. The nation's No. 1 running back has taken three official visits so far this season and two of the head coaches at those schools have already been fired. So what's the latest with Green?

Green is still considering Tennessee and Auburn.

"I'm just taking everything slow," said the 6-foot, 220-pounder who has visited Tennessee, Michigan and Auburn. "It has all been kind of expected since you hear the rumors for a long time about coach Dooley and coach Chizik, so it's not that surprising. But it puts me in wait and see mode."

Green, who has a top six that also includes Oregon, Ole Miss and Miami, hasn't set any other visits up yet.

"I will do that soon," he said. "I'm still interested in all three of them as well as the three schools I visited. Ole Miss is coming to see me next week and Michigan, Auburn and Tennessee are also supposed to visit soon. I want to sit down with the coaches and learn more, especially about the situation at Tennessee and Auburn."

Green said he is picking a school for more than a coach.

"I'm picking for the comfort level and the school itself," he said. "Coaches move around a lot so I have to be comfortable at the school I pick first and foremost."

However, the top back in the country does feel he needs a good relationship with his position coach to feel comfortable.

"That's big because you spend most of your time with that coach," he said. "If Tennessee doesn't retain coach Graham or Auburn doesn't keep coach Luper, that would hurt their chances. I'm not sure I'd eliminate them, but it would certainly hurt because I have such an important relationship with them."

One would think that might put Michigan out in front of the pack with coaching stability in Ann Arbor. However, Green maintains he is wide open.

"The plan has always been to take our time and take my visits," he said. "I don't have any leaders or a timeframe. I'll see how things play out and make my decision when it feels right, but right now I still have more trips to take."

Re: AbarVolfan15

I don't know for sure, but I don't think Luper will be staying at AU as RB coach. He is a good coach - had 1000 runner (Tre Mason) this ****ty year.
