'13 TN OL Brett Kendrick (UT Commit)

The funny thing is that the beginning of the Austin Sanders thread starts out with no one knowing who he is and people second guessing the offer. Rivals "talent evaluators" probably watched 5 minutes of tape on him and designate him as a 4 star prospect and then it looks like a good pickup for ut to the internet star-gazers.
The fact that Brett doesn't have a ton of offers is really due to him only going to 2 camps. Randy Sanders came down to CAK to watch him practice and invited him to Kentucky's camp. When Brett got there they didn't know who he was and just put him in with the kids they weren't evaluating. After a while they figured out that he was actually worth evaluating and put him with those kids. He did really well, and Sanders called the next day asking for him to come back on an official visit, but he and my parents both were not impressed with anything about UK's football program so they decided not to.
He has talked on the phone to Chavis a couple of times and was asked to camp with LSU, he was invited to Alabama for their junior day (I think), Colorado has expressed a lot of interest in him, as well as Clemson and Wake Forest. I guess my point is that Brett hasn't really shown much interest in any program besides UT because that's where he wants to be. If UT hadn't offered him I'm sure he would have gone to several more camps, but what point is there in doing that now? So he can show the E-thugs that he isn't a scrub?

I agree w/ all of this. If Kendrick had went to more camps he would have more offers.

Look at Blanc last year, he went to 3 camps. Vandy, Tennessee, & VT. All 3 of those schools offered, once UT offered Blacn committed the next day. Now if Blanc had continued to go to more camps I'm sure his offer list would have grew, but he didn't want to go to anymore, he wanted to be a Vol so that was it for him.

Great commit. Cant wait to root for this young man. He and Sanders are going to be fun to watch.

Don't worry about these things. People can say and think what they want, doesn't matter. Brett showed up and earned his offer, good for him. Hopefully the coaches find a few more born and bred Tennessee OL's.

I have watched Brett develop and have seen him play too many times to count (my daughter goes to CAK). I was surprised he wasnt getting more of a look from the major conference schools. Maybe more recruiters were interested in the QB, receivers, and the 2014 lineman that will probably be highly recruited. Brett is a fantastic pickup. Good to see a kid who dreamed of playing at UT get his shot.

The coaches said "get him" to Henderson, Cross, Power, and Redding. Clearly they were wrong in those regards. Fortunately they upgraded.

I don't like this pick up. So what? I'm happy with the rest of our recruiting thus far. Sue me.

To be completely fair, none of those kids would have been culled under the old rules. The academic standards and class size limitations make it a necessary evil and especially when your roster is short scholarship players.

There will be more this year.

Unfortunately you are probably right. Recruiting isn't an exact science to start with. If you get to December looking better than you thought you would with a great player... you have to cut someone loose. Its just the nature of the beast now.

I give CDD a hard time but he made the right move here... glad he offered the local kid despite his offer list of star rating.... Brent Kendrick has got the size, just a little rough around the edges. With some good technique he could be a beast. Glad we got him early before he starts to blow up.

GO VOLS!

"They brought me into camp and they were all over me," Kendrick said. "When we went to 1 on 1's they moved me out to right tackle and moved me out of my comfort zone to see how I would react and apparently I responded well."

He responded so well that Tennessee pulled the trigger and offered the west Knoxville product. His reaction was to quickly return the favor.

"I really didn't know what to say," Kendrick said. "I was really excited and my mom started crying. It was just a really great feeling. I told him that I grew up here and that I loved this school and that it's where I've always wanted to play."

This is the kind of guys we need. When you want to play for a school, with everything you have in you, good things happen. Imagine if the whole team had this mindset.

Not to say there isn't plenty of room for improvement but I would wager that his technique is about as good as any high school OT, as he has a former UT OL coach and former UT and professional lineman coaching him.

On another note, Brett told me that at UK's camp he did a 5.2 40yd dash, 5.0 pro shuttle, and had a 26 inch vertical. Not blazing speed but not too bad either.

Team needs O-line in this class, so I'm thinking it's a good thing to go ahead and offer a solid player like BK, to build the base. The coaches know the right stuff when they see it.

I did forget about Meridith, but He will need a full season in the weight room imo and you never know if he will pan out or not. I think we should have 4 TE on scholarship every year imo.

You won't know if any of them will pan out or not, but the comment was we only had Downs which is not the case. That being said a Juco TE and a freshman TE would work for me.

I agree I made the same comment the other day.

Could we possibly have an O-line class with TN boys, Sanders, Kendrick, and Morris, I wouldn't mind that.

More concerned about the speed of his pancake blocks,

You get a kid from FL who comes here 9 time out of 10 they want exposure and a shot at the NFL.

You get a kid from Knoxville or EAST TN to come here and 9 times out of 10 they feel honored to put on the Orange and wear it with class and give their all because they dreamed of growing up one day and being a Vol.

If both option 1 and option 2 are of equal ability option 2 will stomp option 1 into the ground.
