'13 TN ATH Malik Foreman (UT signee)

@Vol_Football: Martinez: When we put the film on our first night as a staff, we couldn't believe that we hadn't offered Malik Foreman yet.

And they immediately went to work on him...like this story

I think he has great instincts for a CB. Like a few posters above said a guy that played on offense can be a blessing on D

Would also be great to have a corner who could catch the ball...lots of dropped interceptions these past five years

Do we know where he's leaning? Osu or gt?

Sadly probably Purdue, for basketball. He has said numerous times he "can't decide" between the two, but also has stated he loves basketball and can't give it up. This makes me feel like he's going to take the only place he got a pure Basketball scholarship at Purdue. If not then he will likely choose OSU, or Auburn for football.

Teddy Gaines was a damn good DB for us from Kingsport, was a stater on some very good teams. Hopefully this cat can come in and see similar success. Seems this kid has bleed orange from birth....something we must have if we're gonna get back to where we need to be.

I liked Dennis Rogan a lot more than Gaines......

A poster on VQ coached both Foreman and former Vol Dennis Rogan and shared this comparison...

I don't post too often on here, however, I have had the good fortune of being able to coach both of these young men during my time as a high school coach, and would like to share my thoughts on their overall similarities/differences. While both are nothing short of great football players, both are local guys, and both bleed orange and white, I don't think they go/went about their craft in different ways.

Size/Strength -- One would not stand out from the other if you saw them on the street, although Dennis might be a little more barrel-chested. Upper bodies are both thicker than you would think, but Rogan was definitely stronger at this point in his career. That is not to say Malik is not pretty dang impressive in the weight room. On the other hand, Foreman's lower body might be a little stronger.

Speed -- This is what makes Foreman a little different than Rogan as a player. Malik has a different gear than I have seen in a high school kid around here. As many up in northeast TN have said, Foreman has two speeds...here he comes and there he goes. It really is almost unbelievable to watch at times when he sticks his foot in the ground off the zone read and gets down hill. I remember watching Rogan run away from anyone who gave chase during the 2005 seson, but Foreman is just flat out gone.

Quickness/Agility -- Both are hard to tackle. Malik's ability to cut and accelerate, as well as his vision, are special no matter who you are comparing him to. Rogan was almost bouncy on his feet they were so quick (and he had some of the most ridiculous moves as a tailback I have ever seen; Swafford compares more with him here). As returners, Rogan would reverse field, spin twice, juke 6 guys, break one tackle, and score...Foreman would see a little seam, cut once or twice, and everyone would be chasing him down the sideline.

Physicality -- This is where I would say the two of them are most similar. Both are very physical corners, especially for their size. While Dennis was a more physical tackler, Malik is probably more physical in jamming receivers initially off the line. Both will strike you whether they are on offense or defense, and enjoy doing it

Work Ethic/"Smarts" -- I would not, and will not, ever question the work ethic of either of these young men on the football field. I have coached for 8 years, and they really are two of maybe the top-5 "consistent effort" guys I've had. Both have that special something when the ball is in their hands, but they are two of the three best corners I've ever coached. Football smarts are off the charts with the two of them, but in the classroom Foreman is an honor student at Dobyns-Bennett. Not lying when I say this...these are two kids I am genuinely thankful ,and mighty proud if you haven't noticed, for getting to know, coach, and hopefully impact in some way.

Sorry for the novel, but I figured I'd give you my take on it.

Foreman is a much better natural athlete than Rogan. But as football players they are close. There's really not a big comparison if you ask me. They're completely different players.

My buddy always called him Teddy (I give up big) Gaines. I never understood that because I thought he was pretty solid

So did I. Gaines was from Kingsport though, Rogan wasn't. I was basically saying if he gives us what Gaines did I would be more than pleased.

I expect a lot more from UT Cbs than what Gaines gave us. He played hard for us though so I can't knock him for that. I think this kid will be a better player than Gaines.

It seems to me we have had a couple of db's with the last name Gaines in the past 20 years, and I think the better Gaines gets a bad rap because of the lesser Gaines' play on the field. Could there have been 3 Gaines'?

I saw a lot of Gaines and Foreman in High School. Not knocking Gaines but Foreman is better at this point by quite a bit. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd put Foreman at 10 and Gaines at 7.

I'm a huge fan of this kid playing ST right off the bat. I think he could help in returning kickoffs big time.

Nice post here, good comments. As I have said before in a previous post in this forum, I will be very surprised if Malik doesnt help us as a DB. He has a nose for the football and is very saavy. GBO.

Just got around to watching this guys film. WOW! He looks really really good! Some of the best film of any of our recruits IMO. Have no idea how Dooley wasn't recruiting this guy.

We,have a lot if options at returning kicks in this class lots of great athletes going to be fun to see who gets that job. Devrin still will do punts IMO.
Devrin had his chance. I have seen both play and yes Devrin in all years at Bearden. Malik is faster and a better returner. We will see

Your avatar is more pleasing to look at now!

Funny...I always called him that too. He wasn't very good in coverage and along with Willie Miles, was very susceptible to getting beat deep. He did play hard and stayed out of trouble though.
