It's true, with the addition of Dante Phillips during the summer it jumped last years class into the top 15. Made 3 straight top 15 classes by Dooley & this years likely would have been top 15 also.
I truly doubt CDD would've taken this 2013 class into the Top 15. We had a lot of under the radar type of players that aren't normally liked by Rivals, 247, etc. JMHO
Dooley wasn't going to flip any prospects if he had finished this class off. We wouldn't be about to flip Lawson either. Yeah he liked Sunseri but I doubt he would've pulled him. What other high profile guys would he pull that we lost out on? North, Green, JRM, Carr, Koehler, Vereen and Harris were going to be his high profile guys. We need DBs but he was losing both high profile in-state guys to out of state programs. He lost Kam Miles and I didn't see anyone on the horizon that would've helped fill the void. No one wanted to play for a loser like Dooley. As soon as Butch got here a completely different level athlete were started to be offered. Especially on the edge(offensive and defensive). Dooley was terrible and I hate I supported that clown for as long as I did.
The talent on the defensive side of the wasn't great. However, he brought in guys like Bonner and Gray and McNeil to help out the secondary. He also had Coleman. I mean, to put the blame of the defense on the talent and Dooley is a little far-fetched. Sunseri sucked. You've preached about that already. Don't back-track now.
Again, say what you want about his 2013 class, but it's all assumption and obviously premature.
You've named 4 dbs in 2-3 years. Do you see a problem here? His juco Defensive guys didn't pan out. Where are the impact defensive guys? Dooley should be blamed for the defense like right now.
At the end of the day, all we needed was a serviceable defense this past year. You could've chalked up wins against MSU, UGA, Mizzou, and UF. We're sitting pretty and talking BCS bowl possibly.
That doesn't excuse his lack of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. I personally want a real UT defense that's loaded. Don't think he was recruiting for that. He wanted and recruited only mediocre/good players at best. While other schools in the SEC are in on difference makers year in and year out. And a serviceable defense versus Florida is debatable in a win. FSU got gutted just like us late. LSU couldn't stop their pound game late either. Recruiting is the first battle you win though as a coach. And Dooley was getting his behind handed to him on the recruiting trail. And this was before the reports and articles came out.
SN: UGA wasn't just going to be a win with a serviceable defense. Their offense was better than ours.
Kids don't have signs around their necks that say playmaker. He recruited pretty well and we all thought so at the time. The fact that they didn't have an impact you can blame on coaching.
Lol. He lost Kam because he was getting fired. Think that would have been a little different if the staff had stayed. Nevertheless, you're making assumptions. We won't know how he finished the class because he's not here. Also, don't forget about Coley. Dooley and Hinshaw had something going there.
I like the offers CBJ has made since he got here, no doubt.
He lost Kam because Kam was just waiting on an offer from A&M. IMO UT was his backup plan. The worst part about it is A&M got the other Cam too!
You have your opinion and I have mine. The other classes had guys in them that scream this kid will make plays. Our class was hoping we stole a prospect or two. A guy like Maggitt's HS film was much different than any other front 7 guy we recruited. Kinda funny that when he was healthy he was the closest thing to a playmaker we had. We all didn't think he recruited top notch either. YOU may have thought that but we all didn't.
That's not recruiting....that's coaching. How many big 12 teams' classes after Texas and maybe Oklahoma were ahead of ours?
So Maggitt looked like a play maker in high school, but he hasn't done much for us outside of a couple plays, injuries or no. I'm gonna say 95% of the players we recruit look like play makers in high school, because that's what big time college football recruits. The fact they don't look like it after they get here was the problem. Not the recruiting.
Maybe they look like playmakers to you. To a few other guys on here and coaches they don't. There were kids we went after that you could tell from the jump they wouldn't help us out. But you can blame coaching because they recruited these kids. Certain kids should've never been offered to play for UT. You've never had turf toe if you think it's easy to hold your ground and defeat a block with a toe injury. Also if your style of play depends on speed you're jacked up when trying to explode off the ball. But like I said we may turn on the film and see two different things. You see 95% where I see maybe 65% at best.
