'13 FL ATH Lemond Johnson (UT Commit 12/16/12)

Little attrition. Darick getting kicked off, Clear getting kicked off, Bray's multiple off field issues, and multiple players failing classes. There's been quite a bit of attrition.

You named 2, and I'll add Lanier. We haven't had bad attrition, far from quite a bit. Stealing and refusing to give up drugs can't be pinned on Dooley either. I'll give you the grades issues though, coaches bear some responsibility for those.

It was attrition that happened under Dooley, his fault or not. I was going to name Janzen but he was all Kiffin.

4 guys in 3 years isn't that bad. Hurts that 3 were top tier players, but looking at the numbers alone, I doubt that we are in the bottom half of the SEC. Dooley has been above average in the recruiting area in my book, well below average in the hiring of defensive assistants and developing players on defense. He put an elite offense on the field though. Hiring anyone but Sal would possibly have put us in the SECCG this year.

I just want to see this defense grow as a unit and play hard sound football. I need some mean players to emerge on defense though. Guys that hate ball carriers and that live for contact.

Danny O'brien is that guy if he can get some burn. I hope he can meet them at the LOS or behind occasionally, though.

I thought Waggner was back at his natural position and had been a very good corner. I have to believe that scheme is a big part because Waggner couldn't have just gotten bad. I was confident with him and Gordon. Lanier was a huge loss.

I totally agree with this. Whenever I look back at last season, waggner's play is one of the first things that jumps out at me. This guy had ball skills and should have only gotten better with proper coaching. He never was blazing fast but you can offset some speed with proper technique and positioning. This guy would have looked like a shutdown corner with Wilcox at dc.

Losing Lanier was also huge. He had just become a very reliable defender (he could tackle very well). However, he probably would have looked inept with SS coaching and calling plays, so losing him probably didn't matter much in the end.

Waggner and Gordon don't have the legs to play CB in the SEC. Wasn't confident in Lanier's ability to open up and run with WRs either. Bad scheme + mediocre talent= bad results

I wouldn't be so down on Gordon. You may be right about not having the speed, but he proved many times that he can make plays. I wouldn't say all SEC, but I think he may be better than mediocre.

JMO but if a CB can't turn and run with WRs I don't know how they are better than an average guy. There's no such thing as a "run supporting" CB like say an "in the box" safety. Gordon is best setting the edge in the run game. He's bad in coverage though. He can only cover one route, which is the out route.

Compared to UGA. LSU, FL, UA, AU, etc had as much or less attrition than us this year.

Don't think you understand what context I'm using for "attrition." I'm not talking about guys going to the NFL. I'm talking about transfers, academically ineligible, etc.

Not compared to how it was in the past and it's not close. The one's that got kicked off were just high profile players.

We had 2 players kicked off and multiple players would not have been able to play in a bowl game due to grades. Name another team in the SEC other than Georgia that had more attrition.

All the numbers I've seen have 7 other SEC teams at double digit attrition over the last 3 years. Hard to tell if they fit our definition of attrition, but they did not include players leaving early for draft. UT was at 5 according to a couple sites, which put us better than 9 teams. Bryce brown I guess was the 5th? It didn't list names.

You'll have to do your own research because I had to go to 18 sites to find those numbers. I think ours being so high profile make it seem worse than it is. 3 of the 5 were 5*

He won't do the research, but lets hope he just takes my word for it. Over the Dooley era, our attrition was much lower to comparable programs.

I'm tired of arguing about this, it's the Lemond Johnson thread, let's just agree to disagree. Fair?

There was a touch of sarcasm in that he didn't play enough.

Apologies. I meant to respond to the poster that took you literally & thought Dooley burned Bonner's RS with 7 plays in one game.

I would much rather have had Bonner out there this year than #10 & #23.

People can say whatever they want about Dooleys recruiting, & there is a lot of bad but the fact is he landed 3 straight top 15 classes. That hadn't been done in a decade.

I liked Dooley as a recruiter but the above is probably untrue.

The attrition under Fulmer was enough to have won another NC. Discipline under Kiffin and then Dooley is MUCH better. There's really no argument against that objective TRUTH.
