I am a Michigan man, but my son is now a Freshman at UT. So, I can give you both sides to this.
Michigan scout writer TJB (Tom Beaver) indicates that the UM staff is going to save its last 5 spots for (probably) 4 Offensive guys and maybe 1 Defensive guys. UM has been HEAVY recruiting for the defensive side of the ball and with Defensive coaches like Hoke and former Baltimore Ravens Dman Coach Mattison...
UM likes O'Brien, but they were heavily focussed on Pipkens (which we got). O'Brien is a very solid player..but one thing that UM got luck on is a walk-on kid named Brink who can be plugged in to help the DLine. His addition has taken a little pressure off of UM to get 2 DT in this class. If Godin (currently 265 lbs) adds the necessary weight...UM has two DT in this class.
----------
UM is very impressed with O'Brien, but just much more impressed with Pipkens. UM's strong recruiting thus far has left only about 5 spots remaining in this 2012 recruiting class. Like O'Brien or not...there's only so many spots and no glaring need to invest in 3 DTs in one class.
From TJB on 08-11-2011:
Pipkins. People keep asking for more film on him. It's limited because:
His junior year he was playing both ways early in the season (on the line, can u imagine) ... so he'd have to pick his spots on D, the 'motor' wasn't always running. Then he hurt his knee, but kept playing -- on D-alone ... however he got inserted mainly at important parts of the game ... and in a 3-man DL-front he was always triple-teamed.
This is what held him back in the rankings, and as far as schools jumping all over him as well at the 50-offer-level -- a lack of decent film.
**Lucky for Michigan**
(and remember, it was no accident that U-M turned away Tommy Schutt ... they didn't want to rock the Peewee-boat)
xxxxxxxxx Note that this places UM's value on Pipkins in prospective. UM doesn't think O'Brien is bad. He's the #13 DT in the 2012 class. UM didn't want the guy ranked #5 (Shutt) specifically because we wanted Pipkins. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
============
According to TJB...UM's Plan A and Plan B:
A1. The "First Guess" list has 26 guys for 26 slots now ... nice-n-tidy ... is this "Plan A?" Hmmmm ... ... ... (remember however, not all Plan A's come true, else I'd be sipping my morning tea on my own private polynesian isle this AM, lol)
2. Would U-M take both WRs Amara Darboh (Sept 3 official visit) and Jordan Payton (Sept 10) ... uh huh. We have reason to strongly-believe so. That'd cinch-up that position.
3. And then, referring to Best-Guess-agin, Dunn-n-Diamond'd make a tidy-26, wouldn't it now.
Again ... not all Plan A dreams come true, remember that ...
The Plan B occurs if -- IF -- Banner and Garnett make the visit and are blown away ... these 2 OLs'd make the Plan B, in which case the last 4 would be:
2 OLs
1 WRs
1 RB
(and a CB if T-Rich ditches)
