'12 MI DT Danny O'Brien (TN signee)

I don't give a sh*t if he" settles" for us or what, as long as come Feb. his signs with us. We are in no shape, right now, to be picky with quality DT.

I'm thinking Danny holds all the cards. I think he is intent on going through this process of Official Visits and being a top end recruit. I think the call was to see, after the Pipkins commit, if Michigan was still a viable option down the road. I think its Vols-Mich but if he does his OV to Saban..who knows

Michigan is clearly putting Danny off. I don't think he would be ready to commit anyway right now, but it's as if they are just letting him hang out there in case they miss on a different position totally and need to fill a spot.

I think he's smart enough to see that.

Let's hope so.

You know its weird watching this take place, because on the outside looking in you wonder why he lets it go on. I know we/I don't know what is going on the inside, but something just doesn't seem right with the whole thing. Either he wants to play for them so bad that he won't give it up or he is just playing the game.

So Michigan is bad for putting off O'Brien but it is ok for us to put off Jelks?

Most of the info from earlier in the summer stated that O'Brien would take his officials in the fall and be a later commitment. Has he changed his mind from that scenario?

In terms of his WANT of being a Wolverine, I agree with the logic thrown out previously by others that if he WANTED to be a Wolverine, he would have commited before Pipkens when he knew the numbers were tight. JMO.

That's the feeling I get too and I could be wrong, but he wants his options to be open and he's exploring Michigan to see if it's still an option. I think this kid is smart though and can see the writing on the wall.

If he wasn't serious about the Vols IMO, he would have committed to Michigan sooner and perhaps we'd all be posting in Pipkins' thread instead.

If he was all Wolverine, definitely. And if he were all Vol, he wouldn't be talking to them. That he's still interested in Michigan means that he has serious interest in them, but you can't draw from that whether they're his top choice or a back-up plan.

More of a response to those who say he WANTS to be a Wolverine. I do not doubt interest in home team.

I know that O'Brien is VERY good friends with Godin, and Godin has been recruiting him HARD to go to scUM. So from what I personally know, my hunch is that O'Brien would have already chosen scUM at this point. I feel like he likes Tennessee more, but he's been going to Michigan games his whole life. I know he has family connections to Michigan (if I recall correctly, my friend told me his parents graduated from there). I feel good about this one simply because I think he would have already chosen Michigan.

EDIT: Before anyone asks, my connection is a friend who is very good friends with Godin. We'd talk college football in class, me about the Vols and him about the Wolverines. TIFWIW

I am a Michigan man, but my son is now a Freshman at UT. So, I can give you both sides to this.

Michigan scout writer TJB (Tom Beaver) indicates that the UM staff is going to save its last 5 spots for (probably) 4 Offensive guys and maybe 1 Defensive guys. UM has been HEAVY recruiting for the defensive side of the ball and with Defensive coaches like Hoke and former Baltimore Ravens Dman Coach Mattison...

UM likes O'Brien, but they were heavily focussed on Pipkens (which we got). O'Brien is a very solid player..but one thing that UM got luck on is a walk-on kid named Brink who can be plugged in to help the DLine. His addition has taken a little pressure off of UM to get 2 DT in this class. If Godin (currently 265 lbs) adds the necessary weight...UM has two DT in this class.

----------

UM is very impressed with O'Brien, but just much more impressed with Pipkens. UM's strong recruiting thus far has left only about 5 spots remaining in this 2012 recruiting class. Like O'Brien or not...there's only so many spots and no glaring need to invest in 3 DTs in one class.

From TJB on 08-11-2011:
Pipkins. People keep asking for more film on him. It's limited because:

His junior year he was playing both ways early in the season (on the line, can u imagine) ... so he'd have to pick his spots on D, the 'motor' wasn't always running. Then he hurt his knee, but kept playing -- on D-alone ... however he got inserted mainly at important parts of the game ... and in a 3-man DL-front he was always triple-teamed.

This is what held him back in the rankings, and as far as schools jumping all over him as well at the 50-offer-level -- a lack of decent film.

**Lucky for Michigan**
(and remember, it was no accident that U-M turned away Tommy Schutt ... they didn't want to rock the Peewee-boat)

xxxxxxxxx Note that this places UM's value on Pipkins in prospective. UM doesn't think O'Brien is bad. He's the #13 DT in the 2012 class. UM didn't want the guy ranked #5 (Shutt) specifically because we wanted Pipkins. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

============

According to TJB...UM's Plan A and Plan B:

A1. The "First Guess" list has 26 guys for 26 slots now ... nice-n-tidy ... is this "Plan A?" Hmmmm ... ... ... (remember however, not all Plan A's come true, else I'd be sipping my morning tea on my own private polynesian isle this AM, lol)
2. Would U-M take both WRs Amara Darboh (Sept 3 official visit) and Jordan Payton (Sept 10) ... uh huh. We have reason to strongly-believe so. That'd cinch-up that position.
3. And then, referring to Best-Guess-agin, Dunn-n-Diamond'd make a tidy-26, wouldn't it now.

Again ... not all Plan A dreams come true, remember that ...

The Plan B occurs if -- IF -- Banner and Garnett make the visit and are blown away ... these 2 OLs'd make the Plan B, in which case the last 4 would be:

2 OLs
1 WRs
1 RB
(and a CB if T-Rich ditches)

This is excellent info. Thanks for posting this. To sum it up, its not that O'Brien isn't good enough its just that UM has other priority for the remaining spots. So it doesn't look like they are taking him correct?

It looks more like the opposite of what the talking heads are saying.

Sounds more like he would go to Michigan if they had room. The talk about he would have already committed are null since they wanted Pipkins more than him.

Basically we have to hope Michigan lands a DB. If that happens then he should be ours and most likely commit soon after.

I think your correct. His 1st choice has been Michigan for a while. He is just willing to sit back and wait to see if they will take him. This 50/50 talk is just people trying to keep us in it. If UM passes, he will be a VOL.

I feel that since I called the McNeil pick that I am now qualified as an insider. So now that I am an expert insider I say that UM ends up not having room and he becomes a VOL. No doubt he wants to be a UM but I think he ends up here. Now you can sleep at night because the Orange Studs guru has spoken. :loco:

Studs has spoken....we can close this thread now. Kid will be in Orange on NSD.
