I think y'all are WAY overestimating how much coverage this hiring will get. Even without NFL playoffs and BCS national championship game going on, Tennessee hiring a coordinator is the kind of story that gets :30 on Sportscenter at X:51, right before the commercial break before Top Plays to finish the show. There is no chance in hell that ESPN is going to talk about a 5-7 team hiring an assistant coach on the day of the national championship game they've been hyping for weeks.

Now I'm sure Dooley has good reasons for when this news will get announced. But those reasons have to do with communicating the news to current players, current commits, and other prospects and scheduling the announcement around his current recruiting efforts. Dooley isn't holding this back because he thinks ESPN is going to interrupt the national championship game coverage to announce his new staff members.

If it's RS, that's a big enough name to get better coverage than you suggest. Telling players/recruits first is also part of it, but UT is still putting themselves in a position to max publicity, however little or much that is. Announce when the focus is on SEC/college football, not when the focus is on NFL playoffs.

Recruiting is about momentum. UT gains nothing by announcing Shannon as DC prior to Monday. It will be a non-story with the NFL playoffs this weekend and previewing of the BCS Championship game Monday. It's not smart to compete for news coverage with the NFL. Announcing Monday allows us to get PR before, during, and after the BCS Championship game, and also builds momentum going into the biggest recruiting weekend for this class. Santos, Peters, O'Brien, McNeill, etc. will all be in next weekend (1/13). We lock them down, add a few surprises to this class, and UT wraps up another excellent class.

so is the DC going to be shannon OCI are you still confident in what you said last night?

Good lord I really doubt there is that much strategy going into the annoucement. We are a nationally irrelevant program hiring and unemployed coach as our defensive coordinator. Some people really overthink things.

^get a clue, dude. This is an extremely profound situation.

I have to admit, I really do appreciate it when fellow Vol posters state that they like my posts. But this gif has truly made my day. Thank you sir!

:eek:lol:

I'm hoping that RS and McCullers make announcements on Monday to become Vols,I'm thinking that they will get mentioned in the ball game ,maybe, and it will for sure be on the ESPN crawler all game long, make a splash for sure :)

Not an irrelevant program or hire to recruits, not that I buy into the Shannon thing period. Won't believe it until Jimmy the Hyman tells me so! GO VOLS!

Shannon, McCullers, and possibly Barrow as Vols would make for a delightful start to 2012. I'd be giddy going into NSD.

OCI, do you know if Lance is being retained? He is a great coach and recruiter (underestimated and underappreciated by the fan base in my opinion), and I really don't want to see him go. I am pretty sure that CTJ is going nowhere...is that correct? He is critical to this staff as a recruiter IMO.

So...

You are saying that you will not believe that Shannon is our new DC for weeks, or even months after he is hired????

Going out on a limb again.... let's see if you can redeem yourself.

I am pretty positive that Shannon will have demanded that within reason and subject to the approval of both Dooley and Hart, he can put together his own team of assistants and that will be a major part of his deal.

That said, I would think Lance will be retained by Shannon but not necessarily in his current position. For instance if Shannon does not bring Barrow with him, but has a DLine coach that he wants, Lance could move to LB coach.

As for Joseph, I remain hopeful that based on his job performance the past two years Shannon will want to replace Joseph with his own choice as secondary coach. Due to their friendship, Dooley will probably retain Joseph, but as a ST coach or in some other capacity. I do not believe they will saddle Shannon with a coach he does not want.
