'11 MS JUCO DB Izauea Lanier (Tennessee Commit)

I brought Kiffin up because Idiots act like players only left or were dismissed on Lane Kiffin's watch.

LMAO the quantifying

Dooley's Signees who are not here:
Loften
John Brown
Dave Clark
martaze jackson
Arnett
P. Martin
M. Dixon
Cam Clear
nash Nance

the point is, it happens to EVERY coach. stop actin like its just a Kiffin thing

I rarely disagree with you on anything, but I do on this. Lanier is a big loss at a position that IMO is already talent depleted and lacking depth. I really liked his upside more than any corner on the current roster.

That's the difference in our opinions on Lanier. I didn't really like Lanier after watching him last year. The further the ball got thrown downfield the worst he got as a player. I liked his size but he looked stiff to me. I like Coleman a whole lot. I think he and Waggner will give us pretty good CB play. Coleman will need to not bite on double moves so much but otherwise he'll be fine.

Wow that is a huge loss. Very disappointing. Lanier was actually my favorite returning corner on the roster. He showed some real flashes last year IMO and his size/athletic combination was hard to find in a corner. I really expected him to become a staple this year in the secondary. Another big-time blow to the starting lineup / 2 deep.

You clearly forgot that at some point your QB has to release the ball for this to happen.

What HG needs to realize too is that he doesn't have any WRs either. Jordan Reed the TE is nice. But he's banking on a first year coordinator from Boise. Have fun with that sir. And I doubt Bonner or Gray will start unless they force themselves into the lineup. I don't understand why everyone is going crazy. Lanier showed no signs of being a true shutdown CB. Hell did he get a pick last year??? We won't be as bad off as some of you think.

I'm with TBB, it's not as big of a loss as some are making it out to be. Buck Fitzgerald has posted his thoughts on VQ and he thinks the same as well. He even said we're likely better off (younger, more talented CB's will get more PT now). That might be a stretch but I'm not the expert, he is.

No picks. 4 pbu's and 48 tackles though. I think it's watching players like Art Evans that made you appreciate his ability to tackle. He looked the part sometimes. I'm not saying he was an All-American by any means. We just can't afford to lose anybody.

I hope BB is right. It's that depth and experience that we will miss most of all. He wasn't listed as a starter , but he would have got plenty of playing time.

My thoughts on this thing completely. Coleman, Tino, Deion, Gray, Orta, Gordon, and Waggner will be fine doing what Lanier does(which is tackle).

I'm with Jay on this one. Youth and inexperience in the secondary means problems. A new defense makes it that much worse.

The only thing that bothers me is (Other than Gordon)nobody you listed has any experience at this level. You could say Coleman , but he didn't play that much and really looked his age when he did. We have to stay healthy and hope that one of them can step up. I know this team is older , but we are still very young at a lot of positions. I'm trying to tell myself it's not a big deal , but I hope this is the only one. Whoever is at risk needs to get it done in the class , but I doubt anymore CB's are at risk.

*edit* You added PW , but I'm not worried about him. He will be fine.

Coleman has had a year and some playing time that will help him catch up with the SEC type football. You also have Wagner and I'm sure I'm missing someone else.

Aggressive defensive calls + Inexperience at CB = Big plays. I hope we don't experience plays in the passing game like we experienced in the running/special teams game the last few yrs. (Arkansas, Oregon, Ole Miss)

Really was looking forward to Lanier's physicality in the bump-n-run.

This is a problem.

From what I have read , it sounds like Gray needs to RS. I don't know if we can afford to do that , but I remember people saying he has talent , but needs work. I think Bonner can play , but I don't think he can step in like EB did his first year and play like a junior. Not many people have that ability. I'm just tired of counting on freshmen to step up. It usually doesn't turn out well.

Coleman getting a year was huge. Also I think the safety play will be much better. Lanier had one year of experience and looked a lot like the same player in spring practice. He just was wearing #9 and in better physical shape. I really think Lanier would be a better safety. His lack of hips and foot speed are issues at CB. Watch for Coleman to progress very very well this season. This new defense and coaching benefits a player like him more than any other CB including Gordon. If Joe Haden turned into the player he was after his terrible freshman year then I think Coleman can at least play solid.

Bonner doesn't have to start. No freshmen have to start. Look at this.

CB: Coleman
CB: Waggner
FS: B.Moore
SS: Randolph

Backups: CB: Gordon, Tino Thomas, Bonner, Teague, and Gray
Safety: Wilks, Orta, Thomas, and McNeil

I'm not about to panic about an average CB. After seeing Stephon Gilmore, Janoris Jenkins, and "The Honey Badger" play well as freshmen in this league. Yes these are special players but Deion Bonner is in no way a slouch and easily one of the top CBs coming into college this year.

Why is everyone assuming we are going to have to rely on Freshman because we lose one corner? We still have Waggner, Teague, Coleman, and Gordon who all have experience. I am starting to believe you guys just want to freak out and you don't care what it is.

The lineup looks good if they can stay healthy. I don't expect them to have to start. I was just saying at some point they will have to step up during the year. And no , I'm not going to panic over the loss of one player either. Though it wouldn't have been so bad to start out the season with the guys we had on the spring roster. Just losing players. I'm starting to expect it , so it's nothing new to me or anyone here. I know it happens everywhere , but it seems with us it's a star or a player at a position of need. Is that starting to get old? Hell yes.

If this was AJ Johnson or Randolph I wouldn't be feeling so at ease.

I'm with BB on this one. Its not like we lost NFL bound CB. Experienced? yes. But I believe Coleman is going to step up this year along with Bonner.
