I don't get people who talk about programs that put players in the NFL? First of all, what does it matter what Marks did? I haven't researched it, but I am assuming Auburn has a different coaching staff in place since he left (his position coach)? On top of that, the NFL is the best of the best. Period. Not just on the field, but in the front office as well. They will find talent no matter where it is. Look at Chris Johnson with the Titans. East Carolina, but just has that naturally ability, and more importantly, work ethic.

I just think talk about programs that put players in the NFL is overrated at this point. With the amount of coach turnover at programs these days, it's really kind of irrelevant. And when people start talking about programs putting players in over a 2 decade span, it's just the most idiotic discussion ever. Coaching is a big part, but to be successful at that level you have to be supremely talented, and you have to have the work ethic it takes to get there.

About the only program related comment as far as players getting into the NFL I would make is that Texas seems to put guys in the NFL who almost never pan out to expectations. Is that the program's fault? Probably not. But the thing is they get guys who are so naturally gifted, athletically, that they are appealing to NFL front offices on what they could become. It's not necessarily a knock on Texas' coaching, but just more on the seemingly obvious conclusion that they don't put as strong a leash, or push guys as hard, as a program like one run by Nick Saban would.
You go to school to become the best at your profession. Not the best in class. Harvard gets different professors but is still a top college. Let's not let logic get in the way of things. With those "graduate football players" comes a tool to help that kid become the best in his profession. Get it? I could go deeper but I trust that I don't need to.

I'm not saying Wright is a Vol for sure, but thinking he is 100% anywhere is foolish.

Sorry about the wright comments. I know this is a Dawson Thread...

I agree if he is silent to UT or somewhere else.

I have not read or heard anything that would make a Vol fan think we have a serious shot at this kid. All his glowing comments have been about the BARN.

He has pitched a few compliments our way but has had AU his leader for a while. I think he is a Barner.. JMO

I think Dawson is a VOL, BTW...GBO

Except football programs don't ALWAYS continue an excellence in coaching each year that exceeds other schools. I understand what you are saying, but that's like saying any Gator that came out when Zook was coach ended up being highly successful at the next level.

I'm so torn...jmoore says UT, LV says Barn. What am I supposed to do with THAT? :mega_shok:

Every thing he has said is Barn. He has pitched us a few compliments but unless he is a silent to UT, all his staements have AU his leader. I think LV has this one but jmoore may know if he is a silent...Who knows. LOL

No it's not a guarantee but it provides the best tools for success such has hands on training from NFL players. I'll go back to a college analogy. Just because harvard is a great school doesn't mean you automatically become a great lawyer. You have to use the tools provided and put dedication into it. Tennessee just gives these kids excellent tools in the best of the biz as alum or former players. Is it a huge key point? No but it is an attractive piece.

VQ: You've been to Tennessee for a few games this past year, what will you be looking for this weekend on your visit?

GW: The life after football is over. The nightlife, we're going to a basketball game and then interacting with the other commits and the other players that are going to be there. That's about it. The season's over and I want to see what Tennessee's like on another basis.

So he's measuring us based on nightlife and other sports activities? I actually like our chances compared to the middle of nowhere Alabubba.

Knoxville is a pretty decent college town.

Not at all impressed w his Q&A on TOS. I no longer will be disappointed if he goes elsewhere. I don't think he has the right mindset to become a dominant d-linemen. I'd still take him if he wanted to come here in case he does and because we need bodies at DT but I certainly am not holding him in high regards as others seem to here at VN. He's been questioned as being overweight too, I've noticed. Seems to lack the drive. Thank goodness for Couch!

Preemptive sour grapes.:)

I have a feeling that if Gabe committed to Auburn tomorrow, people on this board would still call him a vol lock. :birgits_giggle:

Not really trying to start anything but what film has everyone gushing over Couch? I know he's beef at a much needed spot and I hope he does well. But the plays I looked at were him blasting a line of Gooches. I hope he is the real deal for us though.

Right... which is ALOT less impressive than running through a line of slow kids half their size.

Well it looked like practice film because he had on shorts in a lot of that film. But the coaches love him and that's all that matters. Back to Gabe Wright.

Really? No one has jumped on this yet? You guys should be ashamed.

Couch better be good. I'd hate to have to rely on a freshman DT. It doesn't really matter how much potential a guy has he's still a freshman. They normally need at least a couple years in a program before they can contribute. This guy may be a stud but he will be a freshman and they usually get owned in their first year.

Our track record of NFL DTs is much much better than Auburns.

Who has our current staff coached in college that went on to NFL DT fame?

It's not like it's in the water - that we grow good DTs.

And, Chuck Smith is going to have to show that he is going to be able to do it from a true coaching standpoint.
