Everyone wants to try to figure out what freshman can come in and start from day 1. The problem is that we can only make that guess based on current physical ability to play college football. And what will determine playing time for most of these kids with physical ability is how quickly they get a mental grasp on the system. Unfortunately, we have no tangible evidence to base that opinion on. Remember Askew? Physically ready and everybody wanted to jump on his "play right away" bandwagon. We had no idea that he would struggle so much to pick up the system. Luc is physically capable of playing in the SEC from the first day he steps on campus. Will he pick up the system well enough to do that? We would just have to wait and see...

Especially if their hips aren't fluid.

Which Luc's isn't.

Really starting to think Vols are over-rating Luc.

He is very stiff in the hips and in space, he sucks at getting off blocks (disengaging blocks), doesn't have great burst and gets fooled by QBs with play action or if they just look off one part of the field.

I really do understand why Rivals moved him to a 4* after watching some real game film on him instead of the high light tape.

Best LB is Jordan Hicks. That guy can flat out play.

if youre good enough, you can come in and play right away. rolando mcclain came to bama and started right out of the gate, of course hes a freak of nature so who knows if luc can?

I disagree 110%. I've seen Jordan multiple times per year since he's been a freshman. Good athlete but the kid is one of the most overated and overhyped prospects out of Cincinnati in the last 10-15 years. He does not have very good instincts at all.

but he and Hightower both started because of limited options and both made a lot of newcomer mistakes. Most coaches want to avoid that learning curve, but AL didn't have the option at that point. It will be much the same here and we will bring in some guys that have to play.

Agree. It will be the exact same situation here.

The best is a tough call. There are 4 in this class that I really like and would consider the "Elite" prospects at LB.

Cecil Whiteside, Christian Jones, Jeff Luc and Tevin Jackson.

I really like Tevin Jackson. I'm also big on LaDarius Owens. I wouldn't call Owens elite, but he's got a ton of potential.

From what people have said that have seen him play in person is that the defense he is in doesn't use him well. Also, they said he is the real deal.

I don't count on any freshman having a huge impact anymore... you just don't know what's going to happen when they get on campus. Everything changes between senior year of high and freshman year of college.

If we do have a FR come in a make a huge impact... then great. But I don't count on it.

True, I think most everyone thought that Askew would come in and play right away this year. Even with all our problems at LB, he hasn't even sniffed the field.

I certainly did. Does anyone know whats up with Askew? I think its really strange he hasn't played with our lack of depth at the LB position.

The coaches aren't going to burn a year of Askew's eligibility over 2 games. He's redshirting.

And Greg King, who was not nearly as highly regarded has been solid this year... so you just don't know what to expect no matter the hype. Chris Donald is another glaring example... seemed like a can't miss... I remember seeing many expectations of him starting as a freshman. For that matter, Chris Walker has made a much greater contribution defensive end than Ben Martin despite Martin being the 5* DE and Walker a 4* OLB.

Not saying Luc won't be all that... but in some respects the expectations have risen to a point that its almost certainly going to be a letdown.

King has been a pleasent suprise. He's better than Thompson just needs more exp.
As far as Luc being ready from day 1....physically yes, mentally...probably not. He's gonna have alot of stuff thrown at him he's never seen before. Will take some time imo.
