Is he the best fit for the job here...not IMHO. Seems like CLK wanted to surround himself with loyal (family) guys and good recruiters.

Here is the deal on Reaves.

When CLK was hired, he had ideas on staff BUT he knew many would take a while to get in place. SO his immediate priority was to get himself some help on recruiting. He couldn't just let December slide from a recruiting standpoint while he was trying to also line up a staff.

He knew Monte would be close to January before anything could be done. He knew Orgeron would be in Janaury if he could convince him to come. He had to manipulate the dollars to know how rest of staff could shake out.

Reaves was a quick, easy and cheap hire that could hit the ground running on recruiting.

It worked. It worked out very well as the # 10 class reflects. His value as a coach will be determined in the future... He had a ton of value in December.

Thanks LWS, thats pretty much how I had it pegged as well.

proof = signed LOI.

no one can do that.. I predict even if he commits to Vols this month, he signs elsewhere in February.. of course, I don't think he is commiting here....
This is why I really wanted us to jump on Rettig and move on...as in, evaluate the other candidates, including Cam Newton.

Jesse pushing his his announcement so far back (over a month after his SC camp) tells me he is basking in all the media attention. Once they commit, it drops off considerably. Terrell Owens likes media attention, too....let Scroggins decide if he wants to sit for 3+yrs at Florida or USC.

It's pretty bad when you have to explain why the weakest spot on the coaching staff is your family member. He had better teach Crompton how to walk on Swamp water this season and hush the Crimson Tide, or else he and Kiffin are going to catch more and more flak about this, IMHO.

GVX had a big writeup about this very subject a week or two ago...discussing how qualified Reaves really is despite the perception out there.
Reaves was a QB in college (can't remember where he played), and Spurrier had recently relinquished the job of QB coach to him.
I tend to agree with you on the whole, though. If he were not family, I don't see Kiffin choosing him. Chaney would be the logical choice...and let Cregg coach the entire OL.
I agree, he was likely picked for his recruiting ability and SEC experience. He may be capable of doing a good job, but Chaney's work with Drew Brees and Kyle Orton makes him a better candidate.

Chaney is the OC and an OLine specialist he's not necessarily a QB coach. He gets credit for Brees but not sure he was actually the QB coach or just the OC who built a good scheme for Brees to excel in.

CLK is more a WR and OC than QB coach so while CLK and Chaney will be heavily involved in the offense game planning and development they still need a QB coach to spend hours breaking down film and working QB specific techniques with the QBs and that will be Reeve's job and I think he'll be just fine at it.

This is a very good point. Except Kiffin was a QB and is known to be involved with them, Fresno State and the Raiders. Chaney has been a QB coach early in his career as well. It is true as coaches they have mostly coached OL, WRs and TEs as far as official position. Overall though I think you may be right. But if the QB is not playing well I would expect Kiffin or Chaney to move in and take a larger role at the position.

What about Erik Ainge? I am just curious. In a year or two I mean if it does not pan out in NFL. He still on Jets roster?

I would be really shocked if Erik had interest in coming back to Knoxville as well. Long way from family.

I'll need to check though. At one time his sister was living and working in Nashville..SO there may still be reason for him / they to stay connected here. Erik doesn't strike me as the coaching type though

I do not think that she has worked with D1 Sports since he got drafted.
