09 CA S Byron Moore - UT Commit

Haven't read anything on it, but does Moore prefer either position? I would think not, plus LSU is obviously recruiting him at CB given the talk about him replacing PP.

He seems to since both us and LSU are recruiting him for that position.

Byron Moore’s trip to Tennessee this past weekend probably couldn’t have gone any better.

“It was a perfect 10 of out 10 if I rated it,” the defensive back from Los Angeles Harbor Community College said.

“They said out of the (cornerbacks) they’ve seen so far I’m the best one on their list and I’m the main guy they want to come in,” Moore said. “That was real nice to hear. They think I can come in and be that top, shutdown corner.”

“I’m going to go wherever I feel the best place is for me and whoever has the best to offer,” he said

Hope he does not visit Auburn or Alabama or this one will be over.

Don't shortchange UT. UT has a lot to offer him IMO. Including playing time. That's something he may not necessairly find at other places.

Ha I see what you did there. Sorry. Final exams have me taking things too literally now. But yeah, we can't compete with what they offer

Aint seen anyone post anything about it, so I thought I would for those of you who didn't know..

Byron Moore’s trip to Tennessee this past weekend probably couldn’t have gone any better.

“It was a perfect 10 of out 10 if I rated it,” the defensive back from Los Angeles Harbor Community College said.

UT is recruiting the 6-foot, 200-pound Moore to play cornerback.

He said UT’s coaches like his size and potential to cover bigger receivers in the SEC.

“They said out of the (cornerbacks) they’ve seen so far I’m the best one on their list and I’m the main guy they want to come in,” Moore said. “That was real nice to hear. They think I can come in and be that top, shutdown corner.”

UT needs help at cornerback.

The Vols found themselves to be thin at the position late in the season because of injuries and a suspension to junior Art Evans, who hasn’t returned to the team.

That’s why UT has targeted Moore, who began his career at Southern Cal before he transferred to Harbor in the spring.

Moore was hosted on his trip to UT by former teammate Malik Jackson, who transferred from USC in August.

Moore said Jackson and other UT players raved about their first year playing for coach Derek Dooley.

“They were just telling me how much they love playing for Coach Dooley and how he’s going to make sure he takes care of you,” Moore said. “They’re going to be there to support you in everything you do. The program is on the rise so it’s really exciting, the things going on there with Tennessee football.”

UT’s coaches will certainly try to take advantage of Jackson’s presence on campus.

Moore said it’s beneficial that Jackson has spent a year at UT.

“He’s going to tell me the real scoop,” Moore said. “It helps a lot knowing I can call him up and ask him any question I might have about Tennessee.”

Moore, who has three years of eligibility remaining, still has several visits to take before he makes a decision.

He said he will visit Ole Miss this weekend, followed by trips to Ohio State on Dec. 17, Oregon State on Jan. 14 and LSU on Jan. 21.

Moore, who’s also being recruited by several other Pac-10 schools, said distance won’t be a factor in his decision.

“I’m going to go wherever I feel the best place is for me and whoever has the best to offer,” he said.

pretty good idea putting Malik with him. his comments about LSU dont really sound to good for a Vol fan, though.

Of the schools he is looking at now, LSU was the only one he considered prior to his original commitment. Does anyone care to read into that...

I'd worry about LSU with the class they're putting together and the loss of Patrick Peterson. However, I think we are sitting pretty right now and having Malik only helps obviously.

I agree with you guys about LSU. They are going to be probably the biggest competition for him. He'd certainly be a huge get. I really like him at Safety, but I think he could be a very good corner as well.

Getting back to Brent Brewer. Does anyone else think he could make the transition to OLB? He certainly looks big enough and plays physical enough...

I could see this. He looks to be between 205-210 range and he definitely put 10 to 15 pounds in the offseason.

absolutely - thats where he ends up IMO

Many teams are moving toward bigger Safeties. Brewer played well as a Fr this year. I seriously doubt he moves.

i dont recall Brewer making any plays in the passing game. Many other teams bigger safeties run much better than Brewer. He played a hybrid LB role this year IMO.

I think Brewer stays at SS. He has the size that Dooley is looking for at that position & at 22/23 years old, he probably isn't going to grow all that much.

That's how I felt. I saw more OLB qualities in him than I did SS. I like him a lot as a player. He has good potential, I just think OLB might be the best fit for him and it's clearly a spot Tennessee needs help at.

If my recollection of Boise State defenses past (which is limited, for certain), Wilcox often utilized a safety/LB hybrid sort of like a rover position. And it was quite successful. Seems like Brewer could provide this with a lot of speed in the mix.

You are correct. It worked very well for Wilcox at Boise. There are definitely a handful of schools, if not more, that have begun using a Rover with basically only 2 true LB's on the field at the same time. Based on all the DB recruiting I think that is something Wilcox wants.

I'm sure Wilcox would have loved Eric Berry around. Monte used him all over the place. It would have been interesting to compare how Berry was used between the two coordinators.

Couldn't agree more...

Everyone wants to talk about going to a 3-4 but based on Wilcox's past and our emphasis on recruiting DB's this year I think we'll see the 4-2-5 alot more often that the 3-4

And it's the reason why Pat Martin one of, if not the most important recruits we have committed.

It certainly makes sense with how our recruiting and depth is shaking out. The 4-2-5/4-hybrid4-3 is looking like a reality. I'm confident that if Wilcox can get his depth in order, and another year of learning it under their belts, the defense will be a terror to plan for.
