Coaching and scheme probably make more of a difference in OL play than anywhere else. You can do a lot with a bad OL if you have an idea of what you are doing. For all the issues Dooley had, the OL's his staff produced improved and became very good. Kiffin took almost nothing... and made a serviceable OL.

Jones has had talented players. Many had doubts about his system from the start. He never knew how to condition or develop players.

Agree on Richmond.

On guys like Tatum too for the most part. I still like Tatum's upside and don't mind taking a kid with the frame and athleticism for OT, but not enough weight/muscle occasionally. But we were loading up on them under Butch.

Guys like Tatum should only be a take if you're confident you've got the depth to let him sit and grow for about 3 years.

A good coach can take someone like Tatum and get production. You may have to redesign your O a little... but Kiffin started the Sullins twins who were badly undersized walkons, Josh McNeil whose knees were shot, and Aaron Douglas an undersized TE convert.

Competent coaching and a system that makes sense could work wonders.

I agree, but it takes time and experience to actually get good OL play. If you're a playcalling savant like Kiffin, you can mask subpar OL play to a certain extent. It's too early to tell whether Helton will be good at that or not.

I do like Friend's track record and expect to see a decent to good OL in 2019. I'm just not sure that we've got the guys on campus currently to see that development immediately. Hopefully we add 4-6 guys to what we've got on campus right now and change that though. And hopefully Friend can get Richmond to finally play to his potential in 2018.

We have some guys along both lines of scrimmage who are straight up stealing a scholarship. Going to be a lot of turnover along both lines of scrimmage. Looks like they’re starting with the weakest link.

Gonna be interesting to see how good these guys are when they have a coach that pushes them to the limit

Guys - FWIW and JMO from watching a few camp practices the past two years, Niehaus had more OT ability than Tatum. Both are slender built for OT. But Niehaus has a much wider base and wider shouldered. He was also much more physical with his hands and arms. Injuries got him as well. At one time they had Tatum working inside at C. But if CJP and CWF find guys more physically ready to go, they will use them anyway.

Is it really looking like Niehaus' career is done?

I don't disagree on Tatum. I'm just not sure he has or can build the strength to be much more than serviceable in 2018.

Of course, serviceable would be a huge upgrade lol

And Tatum didn’t even get to RS.

And Tatum didn’t even get to RS.

Which is another black eye for Butch and his crack O-line and S&C coaching staff. Took two projects with upside along with Ryan Johnson with RS plans for all three. None of them were ready. Not one.

It absolutely was due to poor coaching. Mahoney couldnt believe what fell into his lap in year 1. Even though Dooley was too stupid to recruit O Linemen every year, the O line was the least of our issues. And to replace Mahoney with Walt Wells....from Cumberland....Geezus, that's malpractice Butch! Phil Fulmer can piece together an O line on a cocktail napkin. McKenzie might find his true calling during the process. This part will be easy to fix, but it might take a year.

Part of it. But part was the techniques and the passive nature of OL play in Jones' scheme. In a good system, the coach can tell a player that if they make a mistake or aren't sure what to do... just hit someone and take them out of the play. Jones emphasized the "fine details of playing winning football". Not just technique over aggression but technique at the expense of aggression.

Totally agree. The biggest issue with this OL under Jones was his zone blocking scheme.

Coleman Thomas regressed every year after he got here. Pitiful! I know why Kevin Mays did what he did.
