The "That's How You Put Away an Opponent When it Matters" Iowa Postgame Report

1. Survive and advance. Survive and advance. Survive and advance.

2. This could have been a disaster. Down 16-4, Iowa had all the momentum and Tennessee seemed to have no energy. Jordan McRae hit a three, then made a critical three point play that gave Tennessee a little run. That was a senior play. It will get lost, but those two plays saved the season for Tennessee.

3. Tennessee attacked the rim in the second half. They shot 25-30 from the line. That is what will win you games in the tournament.

4. However, too many 3 pointers. This team needs to attack the basket and the paint. More pick and rolls would help that. It wasn't easy with so many zone looks by Iowa, but Tennessee is going to see that for the rest of the season.

5. Jordan McRae deserves an absolute ton of credit for handling Aaron White. That was a mismatch for Iowa and they could never get him the ball. Only five shots. Jordy was everywhere on the defensive end and shut White down.

6. Only eight turnovers. Tennessee's biggest weakness has been outside shooting and turnovers. They took care of turnovers and I thought Barton (in the second half) did a great job controlling the pace. He made me want to throw something at my screen in the first, but he did a great job initiating the offense.

7. The Bernard King Player of the Game: Josh Richardson earned himself some money down the line. His future agent (that is still illegal so wait till April 2015!) should show this game tape to anybody wanting Josh's basketball services. He shut Marble down. He owned him. And he was great on offense and really gave Tennessee a lift when the Vols hit their offensive lull.

8. Tennessee's defense was simple. Don't let Iowa get the ball moving forward and get momentum to the paint. They made sure that the bigs jumped out on off ball screens so Marble/White could not get easy looks. In the second half, it was a thing of beauty to watch. They also did a great job not fouling.

9. However, Jarnell's effort was not there defensively. He played a solid game, but he got lost too much trying to protect drives and let Woodbury have too many open looks around the rim. I was fine with Woodbury getting decent looks. Better than Marble or White. But he needs to hustle back to his man better.

10. But Tennessee won a tournament game!!!!! This is a great day for a program and considering a lot of the **** Tennessee fans have gone through program wise the last three years, it's soooooooo nice to enjoy this. I'm incredibly happy for Jeronne and Jordan, guys who stuck with the program through thick and thin. They deserved this. However...why stop here? Who says Tennessee can't make a run? Crazier things have happened. If they play defense like they did tonight, Tennessee can make noise. Enjoy the tournament Vol fans!!!

Go Vols!!! :hi:

11. So this is what it feels like to be a Duke fan and get a favorable whistle all game? It feels really, really, really good!

3. Stokes was abysmal on defense, but made it up on the boards and at the FT line.

I don't feel like Stokes was anything more then a little overwhelmed by the size that Iowa had on the entire team. When you are a 6'9 body out there and you are used to playing teams like Florida, Kentucky and UGA whom play with a traditional lineup of 2 guards, 2 forwards and 1 center, at least Stokes has an opportunity even if it is someone like WCS from Kentucky or Young from UF to know there is one person on the floor whom he can concentrate on. The Iowa team had so much size you could see how it bothered Stokes in first half and how he utilized the ideology of if you are double teamed that means someone is wide open and he would get the ball back out to wingmen who would then finish. For the next 2 games at least, he wont see this at all since UMASS and more so Duke relies on perimeter shots and dribble drives and not crashing the boards. I think at least for the next game as long as he stays away from any Foul Trouble he will dominate inside and they will get back to more of the traditional low post game with Maymon on the other end.

If we're gonna bich and moan about refs, no need to be delusional and ignore being on the receiving end.

Questionable calls are inevitable in ANY bball game on ANY level. No one is complaining about overall officiating tonight. Iowa didn't have much choice but to hack us, hence the lop-sided FTs.

The next game will come down to one thing only it will be the matchup of Josh Richardson vs. Chaz Williams. They don't have potent second options besides a few roleplayers and if Josh plays like he did tonight on Marble then we can survive and move on, if he gets into foul trouble or worse yet he gets into worrying more about his offense then his defense which I think happened a few times in transition when he should have passed the ball, we may be in for a long Friday afternoon.

Stokes just needs to put more effort in getting up and down the floor. He works hard in the half court

You're sounding like a UK fan. Stokes pushed and hacked just as much. Its ok. The win still counts. Officiating is part of the game and the way it was called was beneficial for us. To ignore that is just moronic. I know it feels dirty, we're not used to it, but just enjoy it for once. We deserve it.

The refs were a lot looser than any crew we saw in SEC play. It was an OT game where the total number of fouls were ever so slightly low even for a regulation game. Fouls didn't give us the win. Fighting back from a 12-point deficit, then completely shutting down their offense in OT was what did it.

Reese had two fantom calls on him. And IMO Stokes got the raw end of a couple too. I would have gotten a t on one of Stokes

I came away from that game excited for next year with Josh Richardson getting the reigns. He was awesome tonight after his 0-6 start. Played amazing defense and hit some big time shots.

Well my bracket didn't bust, elite 8 here we come.

Josh was great on both ends after a slow start offensively. Stokes D was turrible. I really wish Armani would take Reese's minutes. Big win though.

One of those calls on Reese was a good foul, at least consistent with the new trend in bball this year. He did give the guy an arm bar and that's getting called a lot more this year.

Yes most coaches "work the officials" by putting your arm around one of their neck while being giving gthe news they reviewed casual contact and call a flagrant. What a freaking joke

I can't remember, might have. I'm not a huge Reese fan in general. Don't think he plays smart basketball enough of the time. I'd prefer to see some other guys get his minutes.

Absolutely. That sealed it. Some folks maybe should stop quoting too. But that won't happen

I'm just messing with you. I get it though, I've just learned to tune certain posters out when they act like children.
