The "That's How You Put Away an Opponent When it Matters" Iowa Postgame Report

Dude it's the NCAA. We can have two post game reports for all I care. I can't make yours first, but we can let you have your own thread if you prefer.

Somebody needs to be getting warmed up writing these since apparently ZJC is teetering on retirement. Seriously, we appreciate the effort from both of you guys.

:hi:

No problem Freak. Happy to have the opportunity to write a positive report. Z and I think a lot alike as it relates to these write-ups. Happy to have him back.

Hopefully this game proves Stokes isn't ready for the NBA. He was abused tonight on D. 34 had position on him all night.

Come back STOKES! You need to!

I finally saw some fire from our players and the heart not to give in. Everyone played their guts out for 45 minutes and that is what I like. Stokes was a real beast inside and made his free throws. I am extremely happy for the seniors. On to UMass, if they play like they did tonight we win.

Effort and fire haven't been the problem. Scheme and execution have.

A couple of things. ZJC, I think you're mistaken about McRae. BTO assured me he can't play any defense. Something about not having any DNA/. :p

Cncchriss, I do believe I saw the 1-3-1 briefly at one point when Thompson was in the game. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Stokes played defense in the second half like a guy who had 4 fouls. If he fouls out we lose the game. No complaints from me about his defense.

But he had two fouls, and was abused by a slow-footed, unathletic kid he should have eaten alive. Kid had a career-high in points. Just saying, he didn't show up defensively. I agree though, if he fouls out, we are done, so no harm no foul.

I may have missed it, but it was brief if they did, and I'd almost bet Marble was out of the game at the time.

Freaking awesome performance. This was a fun team to watch tonight once we woke up.

I agree Freak. They are bounce off the walls fun to watch when they are clicking, but man can they stink it up at times. That rough start had me ready to run my head through a door. :)

It was an awesome turnaround though. I believe Josh got things moving in the 2nd half with his enthusiasm and hard nosed play. It is also refreshing to see us hitting FT's too.

Let's keep it going now.

Thanks for the surprise return, Z. I was about to kill the TV in the first half, but we got to see a new thing for the CCM era: a come-from-behind win, and in stellar fashion in OT. It's not often that a team gets dominated in free basketball like that.

J Rich gave me a little reason for hope in his leadership next year. Great D, too.

Stokes had trouble against a guy that won't sniff the NBA. That should be concerning for him. I think he should return for one more year.

Free throws. Our nemesis. Not tonight. What a relief.

Still hard to understand why we don't go inside early and often, but I won't harp on that after a win.

On to UMass...dancing now. It was a good day.

McRae doesn't play defense like he should. He did tonight. I won't complain.

And yes you are correct. Cuonzo also played it in OT late when Tennessee went up by 7 or 8 (can't remember).

Oh, and I really wish we would have pushed the tempo. We had better athletes on the floor and I think we could have generated more inside looks if we hadn't given them time to set up the D every time down the court. I'm no BB expert, though.

Outside of OT, Iowa played about as good a game as their fans can ask. They were hitting every shot while we were hitting nothing.

If you play that game 10 times, Vols win it 9, IMO. On any other night, when the Vols aren't ice cold and the Hawkeyes red hot for 1/4 of the game, it would have been another wire to wire win.

That would have been a huge mistake IMO.

I'm so freaking happy for Maymon… his bucket in OT was as important for this win as that (bogus) technical was for the loss to Florida.

one thing i did not realize is that maymon, stokes and mcrae played 40 minutes or more.

I agree. It would play right into Iowa's hands. We didn't look good in transition the few times we did get out running, and it leaves you vulnerable in transition defense to run with a team like Iowa, and our transition defense was atrocious tonight.

Also, how much better officiated was this game than the last? (Or most of the conference games for that matter?)

We didn't execute the transition O as well as we should have been able to, so I'll give you that. After all, I'm a doctor not a basketball coach :p

Iowa can really run and they love to push the pace. We don't. I think it would have played right in their hands.

Fought back from a sizable deficit and never gave up.

Martin had NOTHING to do with it. Zilch. Nada.

Great game. Too close for comfort, but a win is a win, and the best win is when the win is in March.

GO VOLS!!!

You have to give credit to Martin for instilling the mental toughness that this team displayed tonight. It was that mental toughness that carried the team to victory.

It was pure sarcasm. I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone say that though, that Martin had little-to-nothing to do with the win.

99% of the time, coming back from a such a deficit is mostly reflective of coaching.

Survive and advance! That's all that matters.

UMass has no advantage over UT other than they are named the home team. Big freakin' deal. This was the perfect game for UT to get the tourney jitters out of them.

And considering Iowa's length, hopefully UMass will feel lime a JV team. lol
