'14 TN RB Jalen Hurd (UT commit 3/14/13)

There are days that they ALL want to quit or feel that they don't belong until they have defining moments when they realize that they do. Every freshman goes through it. Kind the point of the whole conversation....

I'm not surprised by any of this at all. And I think it's meaningless long term, provided these guys adjust. Happens to most people who make anything of themselves at some point. But if Hurd's already over that hurdle 4 days into practice, watch out.

Thanks for the info.

Now and then everyone has a moment of self doubt during extra challenging or stressful situations. That's no indication of anything negative. If anything it tells me they're challenging him, pushing his limits, and thus making him a better player. Grind on, Mr. Hurd.

I appreciate the info that you bring to the board. That being said I disagree with some of the points you make. This is one of those cases.

If you really feel that these are internal, coming-of-age struggles that all freshman go through why do you publish them to the board? Let some of your inside info stay inside. We don't need to know this stuff.

We all have struggles in life. Most of us are able to rely on friends and family for support. I would hate it if my support group disclosed my personal demons.

I didn't see anything in his statements that make me feel any differently about these young men, or anything that should embarrass them. Actually, he just reminded the rest of us that they are young and going through the same types of problems we did when we were that age.

Besides. They are football players at the University of Tennessee. The fan base is part of their support group. It is in fine print at the bottom of the LOI they sign.

Personally, I disagree. I think it is helpful for us to see a glimpse into the lives of these *people*; we are able to see behind the sprints and one-handed catches and bone-rattling hits and recognize little bits of ourselves there. Then we can watch them overcome those things and see champions being made--inspiration! Or, we are better able to have a deep compassion for them when they struggle!

Thanks OH and 74!

Yes, we all have struggles. So, the next time that you want to rip one of these young men because they're not living up to your expectations, take a moment and reflect on what you just wrote.

And so we're clear, I'll continue posting whatever the hell I like.

This is exactly how I read it as well. It should remind us all that these players no matter how talented, they're still kids that go through all the same things we did in our adolescence.

Yep. I think fans tend to view 4 and 5 star recruits like they are seasoned, NFL veterans who coaches can just plug and play and immediately win ball games. This is a good reminder that is not the case. These are talented kids who need time to develop and adjust, like all of us do.

Hey Mr. George, maybe Jalen simply WANTS to be a RB and doesn't give two sh1ts about which position pays more?

Do work, Mr. Hurd
Do work, Mr. Malone
Do work, Mr. EveryfootballplayeratTUTK

I think he will be fine at running back. However, I also think that he'd be fine at WR, FS, LB.. basically wherever he wants to play. JMO.

Even better post

agreed :loco:.

If Jalen is as shifty and elusive and powerful as what's being mentioned, I cannot wait to see him match up with LB's in pass patterns.

Wasn't it at a camp that Jalen simply ran through a LB on a pass? The LB was hurd saying that no way was he a RB, if I recall correctly.

The future is looking bright, fellow Vols fans!

Coming from a freshman in college, the adjustment is difficult to make. Obviously college is a lot of fun, but to some extent there is pressure to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. In addition to this, you're cast into a totally new environment, from a social, physical, and mental standpoint. It's a lot to take in during that first semester. In addition to all of this, these guys are collegiate athletes with five star expectations from our fan base. I can imagine the difficult transition that they are facing. Best of luck to all of the incoming freshman. I am glad we have recruited high character guys who hopefully will have what it takes to push through this difficult transition period and come out of this better because of it.

it wasn't just one LB he trucked in that camp,it was quite a few... none of them thought he was RB,till he ran right by them, then he ran over them...

and to clarify, even though I don't like Eddie George after he showed up at Titans practice in UF gear during Florida week,he did say he could become a dynamic RB,but if he were to play FS,there was more money and a longer career than RB,which are valid points... I just want to see him tote the rock for selfish reasons and pure enjoyment...

I don't know many athletes that at some point in their careers hasn't had a bad day that they wonder maybe it's not for them but then they realize it was just a bad day
