Ukraine Protests

Interfax-Ukraine is reporting Ukrainian sailors aboard the Slavutich have fought off an armed boarding attempt.

If true and if involving an armed struggle, this is probably it. Now the big show begins.

And by "armed struggle," I mean shots fired.

You are late to the party.

And I don't think it was planned. Or at the least, we knew about it.

US officials can't have us panicking now can they?

My understanding is that under START they gave us the usual advance notice. Someone above posted they gave us four hours' notice, but the CNN story says the notice came even before the Ukraine situation arose.

Could they have postponed? Sure. But I don't see how it changes anything. We know they have missiles.

Maj. Gen. James "Spider" Marks on CNN is saying it's pretty much just a fart in the wind.

Each Party shall provide the other Party notification, through the Nuclear Risk Reduction Centers of the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, no less than twenty-four hours in advance, of the planned date, launch area, and area of impact for any launch of a strategic ballistic missile: an intercontinental ballistic missile (hereinafter "ICBM") or a submarine-launched ballistic missile (hereinafter "SLBM").

The neocons on the board here will be disappointed to hear that. Its no fun.

Hold it, hold it, dammit'!!!!!!!

Anderson Cooper just said that Canada is suspending bilateral military ops with Russia. Am I to understand that the Canadians have been coordinating with Russian military?

Sounds like our neighbors to the North might be our biggest problem.

Someone call Sheriff Bud Boomer immediately!!!

Maj. General James "Spider" Marks appreciates your input.

WW III is here!

For fun, go back and read the dire predictions of war between the US and Russia in the Syrian thread.

Now no one even cares what is happening there.

Where did it land?

I think Florida Vol 79 put it best when he said something to the effect of "who effing cares about what the Syrians do to each other."

Think that was in this thread.

I wasn't involved in that thread, but I do know for a fact that the term "World War III" with an America involved makes some people cream their pants.

I don't remember anyone claiming ww3. I do remember the claim it was a proxy war which is true

We now have an aircraft carrier in the area along with 17 supporting ships and 3 subs there.

Troops have also landed in Greece.

A stupid patsy commentator on CNN just made an interesting point: if Obama is a sissy in this crisis, then what do we call Eisenhower during the Soviet incursion in Hungary?

Like I said, the commentator's clearly a liberal patsy though.

4 hour notice-

Supposed to be 24 hours.

Is that Putin slapping obama again?

Technically, you're right. I imagine the decision to test-fire the way they did does have something to do with this issue.

At the end of the day, though, who gives a ****. We all know they have missiles that they can fire. Nothing new here.

Like I said, a fart in the wind.

Now, if Russia decides to move an entire armored column or army to the Ukrainian border or to Crimea, then yeah, we've actually got something.

Way different strategic scenarios. We certainly didn't have a good way of getting into Hungary back then as they were surrounded by Warsaw Pact countries and the neutral Austria. And the fact that Hungarian rebels were actively engaging Soviet forces would have made introduction of US/NATO troops a pretty dicey proposition.

I know I'm right. Putin slapped obama. For all the world to see.

Regardless if we know they have missiles. All the tension and he fires one off?

I know you are smarter than this.
