Da Reds thread

all he is saying is the reds have little chance to make the playoffs. sucks they didn't try to improve this off season.

Guys like that who take shots without any understanding just reflect their lack of intelligence. They bring nothing but crap to a discussion.

Or they could do what I just did, read, and see the division and the Reds for what they are. Pretty well spells it out below.

The NL Central may not repeat last year's success. | SportsonEarth.com : Marc Normandin Article

You already know this, but for the less educated, when they take Bronson out of the equation they lose a lot of quality innings and wins against the Brewers, Cubs, and non-division foes. That has to be replaced and in our case, by a young unproven pitcher who has back problems that went on the DL last season. If that happens again they will have to use their top starters more against lesser teams.

As it stands if nothing changes they could be walking into 2016 with Leake as the senior SP on the staff. How's that for becoming scary bad in a short period of time?!

One more for the road. Bronson article on the D-back site. Confirms what we already know that the team is cash strapped due to the JV and BP contracts as well as that Cueto and Bailey are clueless and inconsistent with their nutrition and training between starts. Which would make them clueless in the off season for sure.

Lol @ less educated.. Braves were in the same situation with Hudson, yes he was your "horse" , but when you are tied down by the reality of a few contracts, what do you expect them to do? Also, writing 3 page letters doesn't make you sound smarter...

I saw an article on espn stating it was smart of them to stand pat.

reds can stand pat and finish 3rd in the division. don't know how that is smart but whatever i guess.lol. time for bobby to sell the team to a rich guy and jock to retire. they have taken us as far as they are going to.

So if they had no money to get a bat, with Cruz and Headley still unsigned and available to fill LF and third respectively - how is it that they plan to sign Homer for around $100 mill for 6 years? The deal is getting close to done per both sides. There they sit hoping and wishing on Luddy, Heisey and Frazier to perform while planning to sign the most inconsistent, yet very talented pitcher in baseball long term. How does that make the team better? Now that he will get $16+ mill average a season after getting $10 mill a year less than that help the team? Is he all of sudden going to have a 2.50 ERA and win 20+ games a year? Maybe he will be trade bait down the road. Whatever. If I was going to throw that kind of money at a pitcher on that staff it would be Latos. He's younger, better, with more upside.

Headley? Huh?

Also sorta hope they give Nelson Cruz a ridiculous contract now just to see how much it hurts your soul.

Maybe they're using the money not wasted on Cruz to look at extensions for latos and bailey.

I imagine we'll be revisiting this when Latos is in the same boat. Out of all of them, minus Homer, I can see Latos getting the long term deal over cueto and leake. Just my gut feeling.

Cincinnati Reds, Homer Bailey agree to six-year, $105 million contract | reds.com: News

They repeatedly told the fans and public in the off season they did not have the money. They had the money, especially with Choo and Arroyo off the table. They chose a good, not great, pitcher they already had over improving the hitting - knowing that they will face this again with Latos and Cueto down the road. With Stephenson moving into the rotation in 2015 - one of that group plus Leake will be trade bait unless they move Chapman and roll Cingrani in as the closer.

So a play-in, third in the division, WC team got better how?

I agree. See post above. With Stephenson on his way up next season, something has to give. It's just whether there is a sign long term and trade at some point. Would also be interesting to see the terms of Homer's contract on trades.

If the choices are: Pay Choo, Arroyo, or lock up a pretty good young arm... Then they made the right move.. Who do you want Nelson Cruz? Let someone else overpay him.
I think the Reds get second place and a WC spot...

just gave homer a ridiculous contract. would have rather had cruz

Or not. Hell, the Reds could have still signed him and been fine.

Yes - something went wrong with Cruz and his negotiations. A lot of clubs backed off him. IIRC he had a $14 M qualifying offer from the Rangers he turned down. Most teams want to see him re-prove himself for a season before spending the bigger bucks on him. I guess Bob/Walt did not think he could bring more than Luddy/Heisey.

Reports coming out of camp are that Price is focused on getting them to more aggressive on the base paths. Not wild, but more trying to take the extra base and getting good jumps with more steals. Base running was not a strength last season as we know.

He wanted 4/75... And nobody gave in... As they shouldn't have...

On the Reds' message boards the bets are lining up on whether Leake will have a lower ERA than Bailey again this season now that Bailey got paid. Many think Homer will do what he wants when he wants like Votto.

I wish I could want a .400+ OBP and have it happen.
