all he is saying is the reds have little chance to make the playoffs. sucks they didn't try to improve this off season.
Lol @ less educated.. Braves were in the same situation with Hudson, yes he was your "horse" , but when you are tied down by the reality of a few contracts, what do you expect them to do? Also, writing 3 page letters doesn't make you sound smarter...
I saw an article on espn stating it was smart of them to stand pat.
So if they had no money to get a bat, with Cruz and Headley still unsigned and available to fill LF and third respectively - how is it that they plan to sign Homer for around $100 mill for 6 years? The deal is getting close to done per both sides. There they sit hoping and wishing on Luddy, Heisey and Frazier to perform while planning to sign the most inconsistent, yet very talented pitcher in baseball long term. How does that make the team better? Now that he will get $16+ mill average a season after getting $10 mill a year less than that help the team? Is he all of sudden going to have a 2.50 ERA and win 20+ games a year? Maybe he will be trade bait down the road. Whatever. If I was going to throw that kind of money at a pitcher on that staff it would be Latos. He's younger, better, with more upside.

I imagine we'll be revisiting this when Latos is in the same boat. Out of all of them, minus Homer, I can see Latos getting the long term deal over cueto and leake. Just my gut feeling.
If the choices are: Pay Choo, Arroyo, or lock up a pretty good young arm... Then they made the right move.. Who do you want Nelson Cruz? Let someone else overpay him.See below.
Cincinnati Reds, Homer Bailey agree to six-year, $105 million contract | reds.com: News
They repeatedly told the fans and public in the off season they did not have the money. They had the money, especially with Choo and Arroyo off the table. They chose a good, not great, pitcher they already had over improving the hitting - knowing that they will face this again with Latos and Cueto down the road. With Stephenson moving into the rotation in 2015 - one of that group plus Leake will be trade bait unless they move Chapman and roll Cingrani in as the closer.
So a play-in, third in the division, WC team got better how?
Or not. Hell, the Reds could have still signed him and been fine.
He wanted 4/75... And nobody gave in... As they shouldn't have...Yes - something went wrong with Cruz and his negotiations. A lot of clubs backed off him. IIRC he had a $14 M qualifying offer from the Rangers he turned down. Most teams want to see him re-prove himself for a season before spending the bigger bucks on him. I guess Bob/Walt did not think he could bring more than Luddy/Heisey.
