The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

I bet I was called that more than a few times on this site when I said before Dooley coached one game at UT that he would fail miserably.

Did Dooley have success every where he'd ever coached like Pearl did? Multiple head coaching jobs with success at every stop.

If you don't think Pearl will be successful, that's fine. It's your prediction. However, downplaying his success and attributing it to Chris Lofton bailing him out and cheating being the foundation of his recruiting is as I said "delusional."

Mr. Hart said this:

“In the big picture, basketball is a tournament sport,” Hart said. “Let’s make no doubt about it, the goal for everybody in the country — every coach and AD in the country — is to make the tournament. And there is only one tournament.”

Let us hope if the goal is not achieved he takes the proper steps to make sure it absolutely does happen ASAP.

The goal at Tennessee should be more than making the tournament. I don't want us to bring Pearl back, but he did set the bar here for higher expectations and we should keep them.

Not sounding like Hart feels the same with today's quotes

Hart gave the politically correct statement. You can infer whatever you desire from it. He actually stated tournaments are a measuring stick....Hart's statement was a cover your backside statement to fire or retain. Nothing new here but now it is out there to justify.

He basically said making the tournament is the expected goal of this program, no?

Ok you got me....no.

Hart gave a cover statement that reads pretty plain in country boy terms in the event a change does or doesn't occur at the end of the year. No spin. No decision made but just basic if I fire him or if I retain him this is a major factor in the process.

Hart is playing the fan base and maybe Cheek also.

This isn't the only quote from Hart where he has basically said just making the tournament is the expected goal.

Expected is the key word.

I think he's saying "you don't make the tournament, we can/will fire you."

I don't think he's saying "you make the tournament, we won't fire you."

I took his multiple quotes to say that his expectation for bball coaches is to make the dance, you do that and keep your nose clean you're fine.

Jmo though

Hopefully this is not the only criteria for Hart. I think the pathetic showing in the NIT are also factors.

I was understood when we hired CCM that defense was a priority and that we should not expect the a flashy offense. Slow down game. He did well his first year and really shocked a lot of us. His best year. Somewhere IMO the wheels have fallen off the track both Defensively and Offensively.

Do I think it falls into the coaching category, yes. Do I think there is a disconnect between players and coach, maybe.

Every player appears to be going through the motions with a few exceptions. This team does not look like a team at times. There is little cohesion between them.

It sometimes appears that they are playing pickup basketball in a rec league. JMO.

We have a lot offer any coach that wants to come here. As a fan and grad I expect Coaches and players to give it their all. I don't see that right now. I think the last hires that Mike Hamilton made were just clogs to fill in the holes.

Hart has got the opportunity to change that and he will in due time. Maybe he is the right AD for the job, time will tell and the big tell all will come in due time.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to what Hart says publicly. ADs are money men. If Cuonzo is fired it will be a financial decision. If Hart decides it's costlier to keep him than replace him he'll be gone. Money drives these decisions.

Tell me a scenario in which the program makes more money next year keeping him than they'd lose by firing him?

I'm not arguing that. I'm just pointing out that it will be a financial decision. This thing about him being safe if he makes the tournament is hogwash. I think Cuonzo has lost the fans in general and it would take a deep tournament run to gain any of it back. If he makes the tournament and loses in the first round, TBA will be comparably empty.

That's my point, I literally see no realistic scenario that could happen that would turn the financials in Martin's favor. So if it's all about the financial aspect of it, there would be a move barring an elite 8 or better run.

And I don't see that being the case. What I'm basically saying I guess is, if Martin makes the dance I think Hart retains him. However, I think the program loses money next year regardless, so in a sense it's not only about the financial part.

You and I are in 100% agreement except I'm 50/50 on whether he's retained with a one and done in the NCAA. It may come down to who Hart thinks we can replace him with. If he feels he can't get his guy, he may keep him another year. But if he can get his guy, he gone. If he's worth 20% of what we're paying him, he'll know well in advance whether he can get his guy. That also means he could get another year even with a tournament miss if he can't get his guy.

If Bruce is his guy then you'd have to think a move is made regardless, question becomes, is Hart realistically considering Bruce?
