I bet I was called that more than a few times on this site when I said before Dooley coached one game at UT that he would fail miserably.
Mr. Hart said this:
In the big picture, basketball is a tournament sport, Hart said. Lets make no doubt about it, the goal for everybody in the country every coach and AD in the country is to make the tournament. And there is only one tournament.
Let us hope if the goal is not achieved he takes the proper steps to make sure it absolutely does happen ASAP.
Not sounding like Hart feels the same with today's quotes
Hart gave the politically correct statement. You can infer whatever you desire from it. He actually stated tournaments are a measuring stick....Hart's statement was a cover your backside statement to fire or retain. Nothing new here but now it is out there to justify.
He basically said making the tournament is the expected goal of this program, no?
Ok you got me....no.
Hart gave a cover statement that reads pretty plain in country boy terms in the event a change does or doesn't occur at the end of the year. No spin. No decision made but just basic if I fire him or if I retain him this is a major factor in the process.
Hart is playing the fan base and maybe Cheek also.
Expected is the key word.
I think he's saying "you don't make the tournament, we can/will fire you."
I don't think he's saying "you make the tournament, we won't fire you."
I wouldn't pay too much attention to what Hart says publicly. ADs are money men. If Cuonzo is fired it will be a financial decision. If Hart decides it's costlier to keep him than replace him he'll be gone. Money drives these decisions.
Tell me a scenario in which the program makes more money next year keeping him than they'd lose by firing him?
I'm not arguing that. I'm just pointing out that it will be a financial decision. This thing about him being safe if he makes the tournament is hogwash. I think Cuonzo has lost the fans in general and it would take a deep tournament run to gain any of it back. If he makes the tournament and loses in the first round, TBA will be comparably empty.
You and I are in 100% agreement except I'm 50/50 on whether he's retained with a one and done in the NCAA. It may come down to who Hart thinks we can replace him with. If he feels he can't get his guy, he may keep him another year. But if he can get his guy, he gone. If he's worth 20% of what we're paying him, he'll know well in advance whether he can get his guy. That also means he could get another year even with a tournament miss if he can't get his guy.
