Dave Hart did not hire Coach Martin (never a real good thing for a sitting coach on the hot seat)
Hart denied Martin and his agent that contract extension.
Martin's teams have woefully underachieved and have been very inconsistent and this team is a veteran squad that had high expectations coming in.
Next year's team doesn't look to be very good and in your 4th year, that just doesn't sit well with anyone
He hasn't shown he can motivate and get the most out of his teams and when that's the case, you better recruit at a level high enough to overcome that. I think it's more than obvious, he hasn't done that.
He's never made the NCAA Tournament.
The fan base is in an uproar and support for this coach is waning with each and every passing day.
From a dollars and cents standpoint, It could actually cost less to buy him out, than to have apathy set completely in and deal with an arena full of empty seats and lost revenue next year.
Bottom line is that I think there's just too much going against this coach to bring him back next year. His agent wanted an extension after last season. Are you going to give him an extension after this season if he doesn't make the tourney? See, It's a real double edged sword, If you don't extend this guy after this year. He becomes lame duck #1 without that extension. He'd be a guy working next year with one year to go on his contract. How can you recruit under that circumstance? The answer is, you can't. Do you really want to rip this program to shreds and leave a mess for the next guy to clean up? It sure makes the job less attractive.. I feel certain, it's get in this year or you're done. Hart has the money in his back pocket to buy him out without ever having to squeeze the boosters for a dollar. He's got a 2 million dollar upfront check coming from NIKE this July on a deal that doesn't even start until the summer of 2015, that more than covers Cuonzo's buyout. I believe Hart is a forward thinker and one hell of a negotiator.

All 100% true. Does the Nike money change anyones perspective that UT can't afford Martin's buyout? I had never thought about it until I read it here.
