Dave Hart did not hire Coach Martin (never a real good thing for a sitting coach on the hot seat)

Hart denied Martin and his agent that contract extension.

Martin's teams have woefully underachieved and have been very inconsistent and this team is a veteran squad that had high expectations coming in.

Next year's team doesn't look to be very good and in your 4th year, that just doesn't sit well with anyone

He hasn't shown he can motivate and get the most out of his teams and when that's the case, you better recruit at a level high enough to overcome that. I think it's more than obvious, he hasn't done that.

He's never made the NCAA Tournament.

The fan base is in an uproar and support for this coach is waning with each and every passing day.

From a dollars and cents standpoint, It could actually cost less to buy him out, than to have apathy set completely in and deal with an arena full of empty seats and lost revenue next year.

Bottom line is that I think there's just too much going against this coach to bring him back next year. His agent wanted an extension after last season. Are you going to give him an extension after this season if he doesn't make the tourney? See, It's a real double edged sword, If you don't extend this guy after this year. He becomes lame duck #1 without that extension. He'd be a guy working next year with one year to go on his contract. How can you recruit under that circumstance? The answer is, you can't. Do you really want to rip this program to shreds and leave a mess for the next guy to clean up? It sure makes the job less attractive.. I feel certain, it's get in this year or you're done. Hart has the money in his back pocket to buy him out without ever having to squeeze the boosters for a dollar. He's got a 2 million dollar upfront check coming from NIKE this July on a deal that doesn't even start until the summer of 2015, that more than covers Cuonzo's buyout. I believe Hart is a forward thinker and one hell of a negotiator.

All 100% true. Does the Nike money change anyones perspective that UT can't afford Martin's buyout? I had never thought about it until I read it here.

No idea. I imagine the guy wouldn't say yes or no to save face...who would...

But yes. The Nike money is big IMO. Basilio pointed out the empty seats and how it would be cheaper to fire him now then lose all that money next season in empty seats. If we don't make the dance, TBA will be Mercer pittiful.

Don't know. Don't care.

Barring a miraculous turnaround, I'm for ousting CM and getting an actual coaching search underway that doesn't include Pearl.

YES SIR! It's not Pearl or nothing....we need to see whats out there and there is plenty!

As a Mercer season ticket holder, I'd like to point out that they are going to win about 25 games and Hawkins Arena is close to full every night. :)

I disagree, you have to at least consider Pearl.

Next year not only does the program need a new coach, they need someone the fans can get behind. If for nothing else Pearl is the best option (at the moment at least) for firing up the fanbase. They can suck next year but if Pearl is running the show, the majority of fans won't care.

I agree that Pearl would be the biggest splash and ticket sales would go thru the roof but some feel there is better options out there. I wouldn't be upset if Pearl came back but I sure wouldn't mind looking around and seeing what Hart could get.

You comsider Pearl for about 30 seconds. Then you realize it's program suicide when he gets loose with the NCAA again and you have to look elsewhere.

I really do understand why people would want him back, but from a realistic standpoint, I just don't think you can let that happen if you're in the administration of the school that his actions caused turmoil in in the first place. I just don't think we have to roll the dice on the downside of Pearl to achieve results that we want.

Lol...no issues with the Bears. Hawkins Arena looks a lot bigger than the 3-4,000 it fits.

Pearl will be the most qualified and the best candidate that is willing to coach at UT. He is well respected by 75 percent of the fan base. It's a no brainer if he wants to come back, he should be the first and only phone call that Hart makes.

I agree. If Pearl is rehired and screws up again, several people would lose their job and Tennessee basketball (and possible athletics in general) would be ruined. I would imagine Cheek Hart and others would lose thier job and that could affect any athletic program with the UT name.

There is so many good coaches out there.......

I've been saying the same thing for months. The buyout is an excuse, keeping Martin costs a lot more than waiting a year to make the move.

If hart retains CCM that tells me he truly believe Martin can get it done here long term.

Who's gonna fire them?

And what would happen to the basketball program to ruin it?
