You know what would make it easier to find out if this guy can be a good offensive lineman? If he’d ever played the thing. Say, in High School.

Mahoney’s taken projects and turned them into pretty good players before. Who knows what’s going on here. I know it’s coach Jake’s recruiting area, but I find it funny that he’s the one that Jackson talks to.

I remember that early in the process, Derek Barnett was talking to coach Elder, when everybody thought he was going to be a TE. Then as he started camping and really showing out, coach Strip started sharing the phone calls. While I didn’t follow his recruitment as veraciously as I do UT commits, I know that Eric Lefeld started out and was recruited as a defensive end. Who knows?

"Jackson committed to the Vols on Jan. 16 after getting his second scholarship offer from Tennessee almost six months earlier. He also claims early offers from Vanderbilt, Duke and Northwestern. While Jackson primarily plays defensive end at Knoxville-area powerhouse Maryville, some believe he might have more upside as an offensive tackle."

Looks more like a gigantic TE or De in that pic than a future OL. He's tall as hell but still looks fit. I bet he could help our bb team

I have a hard time seeing him as an OL guy. If he is, it will be 3 years or so from now. If I were a 230LB DE recruit, I would have a hard time buying into the idea of throwing away my 1st 2+ years of college to try and transform myself into a 300LB OT. IMO he needs to stay around 240-250 and focus on rushing the QB.

You have a hard time seeing a lot of things that are pretty clear.

You may be right. :detective:

I do think if Jackson was rated by the services as an OT, he may be the 1st "47" rated kid on 247(1/2*). You just don't see many kids going into their SR year at 230LBS being talked about as an OT. Well, at least not since 1973.

He's 6 months from going into his SR year.

Blackman rolled into Maryville for a late November semifinal a powerful, powerful club. Junior quarterback Jauan Jennings was a mesmerizing three-star prospect, with a punishing ground game backing him up. Defensively, the Blaze were so stout they became the only team all season – maybe ever in the Quarles era — to send the Maryville offense three plays and out on three straight possessions to start a game.

“They have so many athletes on that team it’s unbelievable,” Jackson said.

...With Maryville down, 6-0, early in the second quarter, Jennings faked the handoff and looked right, wheeling back to his left a moment later for what appeared a well set up screen. Jackson wasn’t fooled.

“The tackle didn’t even try to block me,” he said. “I knew it was a screen, so I just stayed put.”

Shadowing the approaching Blaze running back, Jackson jumped the route for an interception, returning the pick 12 yards to the Blackman 38.

I fully understand that. How many upper level D1 OT's are around 230LBS their JR year of HS? It is not a common thing at all. 255, 260 as a JR, alright, I might get it. Maybe if he can get to 260 or so by the time he graduates HS, it makes sense to me. I recall Andrew Jelks recruitment and people felt he would need a couple years at least to see playing time in the SEC at OT and he graduated at 265. 235 and 265 are very, very different.

Eric Fisher was 240. Aaron Douglas came in as a TE. It's not unheard of.

I get everyone wants to look at the Fisher situation and look for the "next one". It's not impossible, but it's VERY rare. Looking at the JR OT's 247 has rated for 2015(Dylan's class), they have rated 103 of them. Not a single one is less than 245LBS right now. Jackson would need to gain 10-15LBS to be even with the smallest OT in the 2015 class. Think about that for a second.

That's from Nate Solder's rivals profile. I think he played some TE at Colorado before moving to tackle. First round pick, and somewhat similar to what I could see as a projection for Jackson.
