So knowing that Zo isn't the guy - who can they hire that has proven he can take a mediocre roster and have it in the tourney the first year and every year he has coached while making an Elite Eight and attaining #1 rankings for the first time in program history - that you can pay the same to less compensation as the guy he is replacing - for whom you can add any protective language you want into his contract and he will sign it?

C'mon man! This is as big of a no brainer as it gets.

Well let's play on this for a minute...most realize Bruce isn't coming back.

So if that's truly your requirement for the next coach you're gonna be very disappointed. Hart is not gonna go out and hire a coach with that resume, not Pearl or any other candidate.

Is it? Just a couple of questions I've thought about. What would the pool of assistant coaching candidates look like. Is Pearl going to be able to get top notch guys? I don't know, I'm just asking.

How would we handle the negative recruiting, which I would think would be particularly vicious since there's so much low hanging fruit?

What would top recruits and parents think of the move?

Not trying to start anything at all, those are a few concerns that seem reasonable given the circumstances.

When you have a winner coaching your team the players will come to you. It hasn't hurt Cal up at Kentucky all that much, now has it?
You tell me what could it hurt? We are exactly where I said we would be if we got rid of Pearl.

Like I said, I'm not trying to start anything. I don't think Cal and Pearl is a fair comparison. Cal, as much as I don't care for him, isn't carrying the same baggage, he's a championship coach who routinely recruits NBA talent and gets them to the league.

That's not a knock on Pearl who accomplished a lot here, certainly Cal would be telling recruits all of that and then some which is more to my point.

I think those are fair questions, not pointed at you, but for anyone.

We seldom recruit against KY. And to be honest, I really don't think it would be difficult to assemble a class on Par with what Cuonzo has/is putting together so that really a wash.

Pearl would probably run this time around the cleanest programs in the NCAA. Too Many eyes would lie in wait for him to make a mistake......it would be interesting to see.

Not to mention, you have to see what kind of staff he assembles. No way Tony Jones and Forbes comes back with him. I'd be interested to see the new Pearl staff wherever he goes.

I'm not following you on that.?.

What kind of staff would he assemble? That's a reasonable question, I think it would be in the top five questions on a list of an AD.

The coaching business is a tight knit community. People gloss over what Coach Pearl did by saying he lied about a bbq, and it's a stupid rule that no longer exists. That may well be true.

But what he also did was put his assistants in an awful position. Lie and get fired with him or tell the truth and be black balled for being disloyal. What's even worse is that Bruce HAD BEEN that black balled guy and he knew what that was going to mean for them.

Because Bruce had been black balled he doesn't have a "tree". He can't pick up the phone and do a favor for the loyal assistant who hasn't been making a million dollars, who has a family, who now has to sit out a year of coaching...that loyal guy is twisting in the wind.

To think the basketball community doesn't know about that , that any assistant worth having doesn't know about it, well....

All of this plays toward recruiting, assistants are very important in their roles as recruiters. If you listen to former Coach Jones, he sounds like he played a major role. :p

So again, not to start anything, not to bash Pearl or folks that want him back...What kind of assistants would he bring in? For all I know, he's used his time off to build a relationship or two. It's a fair question imo, we'd ask it about any other candidate, wouldn't we?

In addition, how would we handle the negative recruiting, the names Craft and Schactner, just for starters?

We don't compete often with KY for recruits. Cal recruits a different level/type of recruit than Cuonzo does. As to my she and point, Cuonzo recruiting has been less than spectacular thus I think Pearl could recruit at that level even with his baggage.

I'm not referring to Cuonzo and what he does. I'm asking about Pearl versus the competition. Donovan, Stallings, Grant etc.

If I understand you, your saying Pearl can do better with the roster he would get from Martin and recruit a bit better too. Maybe on the first part, I'm not so sure on the second.

What I'm saying is Pearl would recruit as well as Cuonzo has thus we wouldn't see a drop off talent wise from what we have. I do think he'd get more out of the talent and over time his past would become less of a hinderence. One thing I don't think even the Pearl haters would argue with is that he is a great salesman so people might be surprised what he could overcome.

I don't disagree that he's a good salesman, he had some guy convinced he's HOF material, maybe the guy was being sarcastic, dunno. Head coaches don't do it on their own. From an AD's point of view, from Hart's point of view...your gonna get the good, seems like most don't want to think about the bad.

Bruce Pearl's past would have little to no impact on him recruiting kids to UT. Kids want to play for a winner.

Just a couple of years ago rick pitino had a huge scandal/affair. Did stop him from cutting down the nets last year.

Really? no impact. Pitino had an affair, he cheated on his wife. Bruce Pearl doubled down, called the dad of a recruit and asked him to lie.

Imagine Stallings or whomever laying out that story along with all the other stuff. C'mon.

You are thinking too short sided. If Pearl recruits a kid and they get the kid wanting to be here, then some lie a few years ago isn't going to stop them. Be real. And if you're saying that coaches will pull out the moral card, how is what Petrino did not just as bad if not worse? I can imagine a coach saying "if he will lie and cheat on his wife, he will lie to you."

I remember Basilio had a national hoops guy (can't remember name) on his show right after the pitino incident and Basilio was asking him if he thought it would end him. The guys response was like "Tony, these kids and their families won't care about that stuff. They all believe their child is going to play basketball for a living someday and they want the best coach."

I think you're over estimating The negative impact of his transgressions. I think I could sell against the anus to the west.

I am?

Think like an AD, think like the UTAD.

Record? Great.

NCAA trouble/Character? Huh?

Assistants? huh?

Parents/Athletes? huh

The vast majority of both of my posts had to do with assistants, nobody thinks that's a problem I guess.

Sure if he wins and doesn't get in any trouble 2, 3, 4 years down the road, maybe it gets easier. For an AD, I'd venture that's a big if.

66 - imagine we are 2 years from now and BP is recruiting a kid to enroll in 2017.

Do you really think a lie he told in 2010 about an event that took place in 2009 will have any bearing?

I just think he has completely rebuilt his image and time has a way of softening the public opinion on people.

You could be right. If you are an AD at a school that got burned previously by the same coach, you sleeping well?

I was just speaking about his recruiting. I don't think he will coach here. But I believe if he did, he'd be successful.

My bad...yeah I could see him overcoming it in a few years, but I think, I really do...Coaches are going to be really, really tough...

People forgive. I know I do. If a coach started using negative recruiting like you are suggesting it would turn me off. But that's just my opinion.
