I need to remember to take photos of before and after so I can post them.

Never seen the grass get as brown as it has this winter. Sure hope it's just dormant and the repetitive subzero temps didn't kill it.

Cool thread. I'm forced to attempt seeding this spring. Obviously not the ideal time, but I'm hoping for moderate success.

Lay the law down Freak. Tell the landscapers that post here your lawn needs a little work or you are going to ban them from the site. By June your lawn will look like a golf course and you will never have to touch it again. :)

Or I'll have a dirt lawn, one or the other. :)

It will be fine. I will say, expect a abundant amount of broad leaf weeds this spring.

Replace you grass with zoysia grass. It is slow growing. My previous home had zoyia I loved it nicest lawn i have had and very little maintenance.

People try to plant that here, out of its zobe. It is nice year one, then stays brown. Only way to get rid of it is to burn and harrow the **** out of it.

Agreed. I got tired of fighting the yearly fescue battle. Too hot and takes too much water ($$$). Zoysia worked great for me. I figured what the heck everything else (trees, shrubs, etc) looked like crap in the winter so why care about the grass turning brown.

Ah! Yes, very much out of zone .

You don't see them as much anymore, but quite often there used to be ads in magazines for zoysia, people would see them and order the plugs, without much looking into it.

Ordering the plugs in my opinion is a scam. Im guessing they arrive dry and half dead. Ordered mine by the pallet from a turf farm and couldnt be happier.

What's the downside?

What's the downside?

Downside is it turns brown (or like a straw color) after the first frost. It spreads so if you have neighbors that are not fond of it that could be a problem. It doesn't spread as fast as bermuda though. The neighbor thing isn't a problem for me and I havent had problems keeping it out of the landscaping. Good sharp mower blades are recommended ( as they are for any grass).

The upside is it loves heat, requires less water, weeds do not invade it as bad (in my experience), and you dont have to overseed like you do fescue. To me in the summer months there is not a prettier grass (blade size is similar to a fescue blade).

Sometimes dog urine kills grass, I'm assuming this is due to the acidic pH. You don't have to repair those spots....they repair theirself!

the other downside, Zoysia is quite a bit more expensive than Bermuda (which also has the characteristics described above)

You are exactly right. Im thinking it was $50 more per pallet when I got mine several years ago. I was kinda hooked on the beauty of fescue and couldn't make myself like the look of bermuda. Zoysia was the perfect choice for me.

Its not really that expensive when you factor everything in compared to care and upkeep of fescue. Plus if you don't need 100% coverage on day one you can plug and spread it yourself also saving more money.

Zoysia is the ideal grass. Bermuda by definition is really a weed.

Zoysia is double the price here.

Guys and gals, I put granular Dimension pre-emergent on in Feb and Sept every year, and keep a conscentrated Triple Superphosphate 0-45-0 on hand for my tank sprayer. It does it's job and I've tried everything on my yard.

I've never aerated or overseeded my yard.
