'14 JUCO WR Lavon Pearson (UT SIGNEE 12/18/13)

This is mandatory?

You have to follow the conversation back a little. One guy said all the current guys "suck". I said they didn't and pointed out that Jones did not seem to think getting a QB was a huge priority in a class that IS a huge priority.

I like the guys UT has and think at least one will step up and be very good.

I have been critical of the coaches and have been roundly attacked for it. I have not made a final judgment mind you... just criticized the year one performance. Most will include arguments about "new systems" and youth.

Yet some here feel perfectly justified in saying all the QB's suck or that the only good one is the one we know nothing at all about (Ferguson). I believe all 4 guys have talent and can become good. Somehow they forget that Jones chose to play youthful talent over experience at WR. They choose not to take that into account when looking at QB performance... even as they excuse coaching performance with it.

Good post. It seems if you criticize the staff in any way you are being overly negative according to a lot of posters. Not the case at all. I am sure they catch a lot of their mistakes in their staff meetings. They had to adjust to a tough schedule and conference with a weak roster. But the main reason for the season's results is the area in bold above. Not just with QBs and WRs either.

I have posted previously and know this is how it works in all walks of life, when the new sheriff comes into town they get a pass on the results for the first year or two by the mayor while they make their changes. (Insert Blazing Saddles jokes here). New broom sweeps clean. Butch got the OK to focus on his system and developing the players his way. If it was about having to get to a 8 win season in his first year he would have run the same pro style offense and kept Chaney and Pittman. He could have then focused solely on fixing the defense.

But we would not be where they are going to be in the morning either. Which is far better for sure.

From a poster on VQ, thought it was worth sharing...

I always hear a lot of stuff from the players because I interact with them on a daily basis but I rarely post that stuff in here. Today I was speaking with one of our potential starting OL for next season and he told me a neat story about Pearson that many may not know.

He said that out of high school Pearson did not go to college. His grades were so bad that he went and worked at a local McDonald's flipping burgers. After a year and a half of working there, one day a guy came in and recognized him and said "Aren't you that guy from Denbigh that was really good?" Pearson said yeah. The guy asked why he wasn't playing college football. Pearson said that his grades weren't good enough. The guy said "Uh, you know you can go to a JC and try and get in that way?" Pearson didn't know that and the next day he quit at McDonald's and enrolled at Feather River College. After dominating his first year CBJ called him and on the phone he said "Yeah, I'll come play for you in Knoxville." Butch was kind of shocked and said "Wait you're committing right now? Do you not have any other offers?" Pearson said no and Butch said to keep the commitment somewhat quiet so other schools wouldn't see what Butch saw and offer the WR. Pearson was so honored that Butch gave him an opportunity to continue football that he didn't care who else wanted him.

Pretty cool stuff. Obviously those quotes are not exact words from Butch or Pearson but that is the story I was told by this OL. He also told me that so far his shiftiness, agility, and speed is as good as CP if not better. And this is not a guy who exaggerates too much.

Fortenberry commented in the thread and said it's a true story. Pretty incredible.

Hearing he has been very impressive thus far and should contribute immediately. We got a steal with this guy.
